Description
I know this topic is difficult for some people. For me, using this method has made it super easy! These aren't perfectly realistic wings by the way. I just find that they have a really good quick/quality ratio, that works fine for me when drawing angels or beasts or random birds. If you're looking for really anatomically precise wings, check out these 2 tutorials: [link] & [link] they just take longer.
So I'm sharing /o/.
EDIT: Because some found this confusing, I'm explaining better what I mean by top/under, inside/outside:
"under-side" = stomach-side
"top-side" = back-side
"Inside" = closer to the body of the bird
"Outside" = closer to the edge of the wing = further from the body.
Beware randomly shaped birds in this tutorial and please note that if you want to make fantastically-shaped wings, you can! The main thing to remember here is the structure.
Please tell me if you find this useful, and don't hesitate to share your drawings if you use it, I'd love to see them!

helpful wing fact: when the wing sweeps down, the primary flight wings (the ones radiating from section 1) are together but on the upstroke they delaminate, opening out to allow air to pass between them.

Awesome tutorial!
But there's one point I struggle to understand. Maybe you can help me out here ^^
"Also, if you're drawing the top-side of the wing, inside feathers will overlap outside feathers. For the under-side it's opposite."
For me this sounds, that if you look at the back of the wing, you'll see the smaller feathers on the top overlapping the longer feathers on the bottom of the wing.
And that if you look at the inside of the wing, you'll see the longer feathers on the bottom overlapping the smaller feathers on the top?
I somehow doubt that I understand this right, especially since your examples at the end of the tutorial always show the smaller, upper feathers overlapping the longer feathers.
I'm pretty sure it's my fault for not understanding it correctly (and I would accusing it to the language barrier, english isn't my natural language after all), so... maybe you can explain me what you meant by that point?
I would really appreciate it ^^

Tiamate In reply to Rutana [2012-10-23 10:10:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah sorry, I guess what I call top/under sides and outside/inside may be confusing.
What I call:
"under-side" = stomach-side
"top-side" = back-side
"Inside" = closer to the body of the bird
"Outside" = closer to the edge of the wing = further from the body.
English isn't my mothertongue either so I'm also having trouble finding the right formulation XD. I'll add this to the artist's description though, because other people might be confused too.

bat wings: draw like a human arm. Extend fingers. Add webbing! DONE!
Seriously, though, here's an embarrassingly old (I was 15) tutorial that hits the basics. [link]
here's one on bat anatomy that at a glance appears to be better for visual representation. [link]
