Description
For all of you who would like to know how to draw better wings, may I present to you, the wing tutorial.Since this only covers the extended underwing, I will most likely do another wing tutorial, for the half-closed upperwing (kill two birds with one stone, no pun intended
This also has a tiny area explaining how to do feathers. Not as many little jokes, as with the last tutorial, but hopefully it's informative.
Also, since there were some people who didn't know how to view my last tutorial, to view this, click the little down-arrow beneath the image (the 'download' arrow) and it will open the whole thing.
Enjoy!

I don't think I can even explain how helpful this was for me!
I love how you explained everything perfectly!
Although, I do have one question. I've searched it as well, but I couldn't find a good enough / clear answer. What are the notches?

windfalcon In reply to Chaotic-Raze [2013-12-07 03:56:03 +0000 UTC]
The notches are the areas of the first four primary feathers (the biggest, longest feathers on the edge of the wing) that are thicker than the 'fingers' of the feather. When the bird flaps its wings down, it helps the feathers 'lock' and give the bird lift.

This was actually very helpful for me when trying to draw wings somewhat realistically. I could never before understand what the wings would look like and mine would always turn off looking weird in some way shape or form.
Thank you so much for doing this! This is the best wing-representation I've found so far! (:

After wading through a frustrating number of 'how to draw wings' tutorials featuring the flight-useless (without magic) wings, with helter skelter placement of feathers and underlying structure born of lovecraft this is a breath of fresh air and a lot more useful.
I've been using the draw-the-bones first method to get shape right for years but the way you break down feather placement makes it very understandable. Thank you for posting this.

I'm very glad to hear you found it helpful. I, too, was frustrated with all the tutorials teaching how to draw wings, which ended up being the structureless variety that were based more in design than functionality.

I just don't like how they're presented xD I mean you have to have a basic understanding of how something like that works before going into duplicating it, unless you want to look ridiculous to people who actually ARE familiar with the structure.
It's like all the kids that have taught themselves how to draw anatomy SOLELY by looking at manga/western comics... the end result just isn't right.

hm i like that tutorial....but i think the wing is a bit...hmm how could i say...I think the primarys COULD be a bit longer? but its a personal thing i think. ^^ also funny that a hawk-wings is drawn with a falcon sitting below..xDD

I'm glad you chose to use a hawks wing, because thats exactly what I have to draw! Thank you so much! This tutorial has really helped my understand the structure better! Your very smart!

I feel hawk wings represent wing structure better than a lot of other birds when it comes to the type of wings people want when drawing winged fantasy creatures angels, pegasi, etc. I'm glad you found it useful!

um...are you going to do another tutorial on how to do a half open wing from below?
this is really helpful for when i need to do open wings, but i recently find myself dong half closed with the bottom...long...feathers flowing back towards to shoulder area. not sure if that makes sense, these wings are on angels....
thanks! (oh, i love the feather tutorial!)

windfalcon In reply to SlayerTerraBrei [2008-12-11 03:30:22 +0000 UTC]
I've done a half-open wing from above, [link] but I have no plans on doing a half-open wing from below since the rules to the wing from above apply to the wing from below, except reversed. From below, the 'top feather' would be the one furthest from the body, and the primaries would slide in front of the secondaries when closing.

I know that you did this FOREVER ago but I still enjoy this one and part 2! and I shall fav. them!!
Thanks for putting this up, it is very helpful, I'm really bad at wings and have been looking for ways to improve because I like the more realistic wing types and to me, they is kinda hard to do.

Nice!
My speciality is sketching birds, as I do them so much that I have developed a knack for them. However, three things that always get me are:
1) The Wing (I used to just put feathers randomly)
2) The Legs (To be specific, how to attach them)
3) The Head (To be specific, the beak. God, that thing sometimes defies explanation on my drawings. ONLY thing that I regularly screw up! Heck, I even manage to pull off making feathers completely random most of the time!)
Still, this kills one of my three birds. Thanks! And if you ever consider doing a beak tutorial, PLEASE cover how to make it connect properly with the head. I have to redraw the head around the beak to get it to even look relatively right

This should help as well as the other wing tutorial of yours. 83 I just gotta remember the whole "top" feather thingy. I should probably write down notes. xD
But anyways, this should really help me! ^^ Glad I looked at this!

i need this for drawing a character of mine for an RPG i'm playing. i get bonus points if i put effort into drawing my char which just happens to be part bird. this is awesomely what i want. your description of the wing as an arm is actually quite accurate. they have 5 "fingers" but the proportions are way different.
i was wondering if you know of any decent tutes for the other parts of a bird, namely the head (preferably a falcons) and talons/legs. although i think i might be able to get talons/legs by myself. or if you don't know of any off hand (here comes the big ask) could you please write some?

I know that `Cedarseed has some amazing bird tutorials. After checking her page, I found these three:
Part 1 which focuses on all parts of the bird, including feathers: [link]
Part 2 which focuses on specific species (including falcons) : [link]
Part 3 which focuses on even more species: [link]
I hope these help. Perhaps in the future I'll do some tutorials of my own on other parts of the bird.
