Description For all of you who would like to know how to draw better wings, may I present to you, the wing tutorial.

Since this only covers the extended underwing, I will most likely do another wing tutorial, for the half-closed upperwing (kill two birds with one stone, no pun intended ).

This also has a tiny area explaining how to do feathers. Not as many little jokes, as with the last tutorial, but hopefully it's informative.

Also, since there were some people who didn't know how to view my last tutorial, to view this, click the little down-arrow beneath the image (the 'download' arrow) and it will open the whole thing.

Enjoy!

HALLELUJAH This has to be THE best, most detailed wing tutorial I've ever seen. I'd be hard pressed finding another that thoroughly explains feather arrangement like you did.
I have a question. Would you happen to know whether the feathers are arranged the same in the inside of the wing as on the outside?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to DracoPheonus [2007-08-25 15:45:37 +0000 UTC]

Feathers are arranged slightly differently on the inside of the wing as on the outside. The only difference is that on the 'top' side of the wing, the 'front' feather is closest to the bird, and they're layered from there. On the 'under' side of the wing, the 'front' feather is furthest from the bird, and they're all layered from there.

Here's an easier way to explain it. The tutorial you commented on is for the wing as viewed from below. Notice how the top-most feathers are on the wing farthest from the bird.

Now this tutorial is for the wing as viewed from above: [link] Notice how the top-most feathers on the wing are closest to the bird. There are also differences in the structure of the smaller feathers (coverts, etc) from the top and bottom of the wing, but unless you're aiming for absolute accuracy, it's not necessary to obsess too much over them.

I'm very glad my tutorial was helpful to you! I got a bit sick of seeing all those tutorials on how to draw 'wings' that were...not structurally wings at all. The feathers on those tutorials would look like fur or ribbons or something, so I decided to do a realistic wing tutorial.

Thanks! Hmm you're right. I guess not many would really notice the differences.

Yes, your tutorial is very helpfull. ItΒ΄s short and precise.
I began recently a drawing where I draw a bird from my intuition. Sure, it is not anatomically correct, but it should not become one necessarily.
But I think your tutorial will help me next time. Thank you!

I have no idea why, but I can't see anything right now -- the preview gives me a poetry and prose preview, and the full view gives me a blank page. It's probably dA acting up? I'll try again later.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to Majnouna [2005-09-27 15:13:10 +0000 UTC]

It is? That's odd. I just checked it and everything seems to be working fine. The preview image should be a falcon with the words "Download Wing Tutorial," and the full view should take you to the tutorial itself.

I hope it was just a glitch o_o

This will probably help me out with my science as well as drawing, lol, i think including real knowledge of the animal ('s wings) has made it easier to imagine drawing wings in different ways (if that made any sense...), that tip about a wing being like a human arm is really helpful,

windfalcon In reply to roughly-loveandhate [2005-09-19 23:25:06 +0000 UTC]

I hope it will prove useful I figure the best way to explain a bird's wing is in the terms of human anatomy. While it's far from exact, it's close enough for people to understand it better.

I haven't downloaded it yet but. i have a question, have you done demon or bat like wing tutorials or do you do those kinds of totorials?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to leo-darkheart [2004-06-08 12:21:05 +0000 UTC]

This is my first wing tutorial so far, but it's a feathered wing (bird wing) tutorial. I'm not very good at demon or bat wings, and I think there are people out there that could do a much better job at doing a demon/bat wing tutorial than I.

But, if you want to know how to draw feathered wings, this is the place!

Supoib, and definitely handy. Hehe, out of curiosity does it bug you if people draw wings that are just random or stylized?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

windfalcon In reply to kdeln [2004-06-08 01:34:02 +0000 UTC]

Not at all! This tutorial was just for people who want to improve their wings realistically. I have a friend who has a stylized way of drawing wings, and I absolutely adore his work.

Wings good however you want to draw them
