Description I did a bit of redesigning (again). Orange is such a fun, vibrant color that I think more should be done with it. So I took the liberty of doing just that.

Orange is so fresh, true! Your character suits the color, looks like a quite outgoing, fun and active creature

Sorry I have a silly question, what are those redesigns for? Is it just your kind of practice that you happen to upload on dA, or are they used anywhere on the internet?

They are not actually going to be used anywhere, but they're all based on charatcers from Neopets.com, a virtual pets website I used to frequent when I was younger. I make them for fun or by request.

Well, good exercise Actually they could refresh the designs somewhat on Neopets. I also been hooked up on this website while younger, just visited it recently to check if designs changed and to my surprise nothing much has changed from what was years ago! I was shocked. Your designs are very close to what they have and yet they feel fresh. Other important thing is that they seem consistent. On their website I can feel the difference between each pet, I can tell which design is older and newer just by looking at it. I'm not sure if it's due to the fact I've seen them so many times or simply it feels like different people drew them. Ever thought of just giving it a try and sending them up some of your best designs for some fee? I don't know if it works that way exactly.. but why not give it a try?

I think the inconsistency is from a few things - one, like you said, having lots of different people draw new ones without having some sort of style guide to reference (any decent creative undertaking, whether is be a game, a movie, or a TV show has an official style guide that helps artist create new characters, props, and environments that all work together, creating a stylistically cohesive world. Style guides usually cover everything, from shapes to colors). Two, I think a lot of it has to do with the history of the site. It started out very rough and gradually progressed, but some things have been redesigned and some haven't. That may also be due to the creators wanting to stay true to their fan base - if fans are used to and attached to certain things, changes may not occur.

Ha! I would love to send designs to Neopets! It's not quite that simple, though. Probably if I want to do anything at all for Neopets, I'd have to apply to Nickalodeon, who own the place.

Yes, I've been thinking so. About staying true to fans, nowadays many websites seem to take the leap of faith and redesign to new standards. For most part people will complain for a little, as any change at the beginning is not perceived positively and then they will simply get used to.. Plus this suppose to bring new people in. Neopets lost their popularity, they seem to be in stagnation, not caring to be seen anymore. I can't name them unprofessional, in their days website seemed awesome, but it just doesn't feel like it moved anyhow forward from that time. I hope you don't mind me writing down my thought flow

But that would be awesome! You wont know until you wont give it a try ^^ It wouldn't hurt to see what happens You already have people asking for your work! That's another plus, you don't come from shadow, you have already some group of people following your work.

I know it's a bit of off-topic, but have you seen Bobby Chiu's book "The Perfect Bait"? I don't want to seem like advertising, but for me it's such an mental boost for working that I just can't stay silent, I need to share! So it's available for free as an audiobook for few days more, till 10th January, I invite you to listen through! Here's the link: [link]

I totally agree with redesigning to attract new people. Neopets has completely failed in that regard. I think they could really relaunch the site and probably get a lot more traffic - as far as I know, Disney's Club Penguin is a similar thing and has done very well. I think adding the clothes and the ability to dress your pets probably helped, but it's just not enough. Neopets still very much relies on lots of clicking links with little interaction, which was cool in the late 90s but is outdated now. I wonder if they've ever considered making a mobile app for it. That's where so many games for the average user are now.

I'll definitely be applying for Nickalodeon once I graduate school. I try to keep who I am professionally as an artist kind of hush hush on this dA page, but I almost finished with school and I'm on a solid path to becoming a professional artist. I've got an internship for the spring and once I graduate, I'll be applying to all the major studios and a bunch of smaller ones. I've already got an insider at Disney Junior who can probably help me out!

Oh, I have that book by Bobby Chiu! I've been following his work for many years now. I actually got it signed by him at CTN Expo here in LA. I got to mention to him briefly that I've been a long time fan and admire his contribution to the artistic community.

Yes! It's so interesting, I'd love to know what are they thinking, what's their strategy.. Do they do that on purpose or are they simply not interested anymore in development.

I've looked at your tumblr and I've got amazed indeed! I wish I could follow your all art on devART, because it's gorgeous I'm not really fan of blogs.. sometimes I act a bit old-fashion and stubborn to some of nowadays things Why is it that you hide your art from dA? Do you want people to discover more of it on their own, or you don't like people here stealing art and etc.?

Awww, that sounds great! Good job It must be so much rewarding to have more stable look on future! Do you think that school helped you in achieving this goal? Sorry for so many questions, I'm just struggling with getting the right motivation and to follow my passion for my art. I'm a book example of what Bobby is mentioning in his book. It just seems like he's talking to me and it feel so weird XD And even though I hear all what he says, I tend to discard it and go back to my old ways of thinking. Sometimes it just feels so silly!!

Eeeep! You've got to see him and have this book singed by him, it's like triple driple motivation boost I'm trying to earn some money to buy it.. so far I'm failing badly.. I have no one but me to blame, I spend to little time on things and then I get discouraged and quit.

The reason I keep the two separate is because for one thing, I don't want my colleagues from school to know I draw sill, prancy-fancy ponies for fun. And two, I don't want my professional self to be associated with that either. As far as practice goes, it certainly serves as practice, but not the kind I'd like to showcase. I plan on making another dA account for my other stuff soon and have this one be strictly Neopets, but I'm not sure when I'll do that. (There are always exceptions of course - if some job requests vector know how and cute characters, I would totally show them this site.)

You know, I complain a lot (a lot) about my school, but it really has helped me get me where I am. Could it be better? Of course! I'm sure I could say that about any school. Do I wish I would have done more research on other schools before I got in? Sure! But at the end of the day, the work ethic and skill set I've gained has been simply invaluable. Also, the career office and faculty have been wonderful. Just saying to potential employers I'm from the school I am is a big boost.

But, seriously, it's not all fun. In fact, a majority of it is heart-breaking and frustrating. As I get better, that gets better, but I imagine it will always be a component of the field. There are also serious jealousy and competitive problems at my school that bring everyone down. Doing this is not for everyone and before going to a school like mine, you really need to know you're committed. Now I guess is the time for you to decide if it's just a fun hobby or something you can spend 40 hours a week doing. Like anything, there are times when it goes from fun to just work.

I see, it totally makes sense I would love to watch the other account also, I hope you will get one soon! ^^

Haha, yeah, no school is perfect. I see, I guess school is indeed a boost, you explore broad enough amount of topic and you're simply motivated more to work to finish and get that paper. You also meet interesting people and who knows where those friendships might take you actually. On the other hand one also must be engaged and willing to learn to gain anything from school and sometimes do more then required. Well, thank you for sharing your point of view! ^^

Yeah, from my little experience I've got to know it's not all fun and sometimes it's still hard for me to accept. But honestly, what is easy and fun in life, surely not work, most of people hate it.. I know there's nothing better for me waiting out there, nothing that I'd enjoy more then this, I've been searching and I found nothing. It's just a matter for getting used to things by practice.

Do you mind if I ask how old you are? If I know, I might be able to provide good guidance if you are certain you want to pursue art.
