I see where you are going with this... but there is a standard where art stands. For example, I am not a big fan minimalist paintings, because i don't find lines on a canvas to be appealing, but there are others that would love it because you see a painting not by it's content but by the mood it sets. That is a difference in taste right? like the point you're making.
But again, and i really am tired of saying this to ticktock right now, a blurry snapshot is not art not because of a difference of opinion, but because it goes under standards of quality.
Photography already have been criticized enough as it is as an art, and in return there is always this great debate about what is art photography and snap shot photography. So it's not just my opinion, but an artistic standard of what is art photography is.
If i take a photo of myself when I'm out with my friends then i know it's just a snapshot. If there was a photographic opportunity when i am out and i made an artistic attempt it might be art. I know there's a line between art and snapshots, but 'clarity' is clearly a snapshot.
Ask tick tock... what was his artistic intent was for this photo. Let's just be honest here; Is this the standard of art we want for photographers in deviant art?

I agree that the quality and attempt was not the best and there probably was no precognitive preparation - however there are still people who consider those ridiculous splatters of paint on fabric - just splatters - art, no matter how many times it has been done. I could do that in my sleep- just as well as anyone could take a random snapshot. It happens all the time- and just because one boy does as such doesn't mean the entire populous is going to be begin a downward spiral. His influences may be a tiny spark of the " butterfly effect " however -We don't see thousands of other people rushing out to do the same thing. Saying something like " Is this the standard of art we want " is like saying that there was a predetermined requisite for his posting any piece of work he does. Thats not deviant art, deviant art is for people who post pictures because they want to show what they think looked good- that they did. To maybe get noticed, and who knows- maybe this picture of him could get him recognized by a modeling agency or something. Not saying it will but- honestly. Who is anyone to say what a standard is- thats like society saying " lets set a standard for normal " - who decides who's normal? The rich people who aren't exactly all that abundant. You want to set a standard for normal- go down to the lower class and start making everyone work at burger king... <3 :: rant rant rant.::

My dear... The spark of the butterfly effect was made ages ago. There are thousands of pictures just like this one in deviant art. The only reason why I am picking on this poor soul is not because i find him the worst, not at all, in fact he's just like all the rest. But because i happen to have stumbled on his photo on my final straw.
I love intelligent debates, and I'm glad that there are great responses here. But really, there is no way in the world that anyone can debate that this photo is art. No way, there was no thought in it. It's a snap shot.

Well I can debate anything I wish to - it's all personal opinion when it comes down to it- yet again you've stated your own personal opinion. ^_^ I'm glad we could have this talk. I refuse to submit to either side honestly- though I do like this picture, I both agree and disagree. And forever will chock it up to personal opinion.

As much as I love ticktock (not because hes a hot 'emo' boy on deviant art, but because I know him IRL and hes practically my surrogate brother) I do agree with you. He should really re classify this picture as a self portrait or yes even as a scrap.
But to go off on an emo trend rant, thats not constructive criticism, thats pretty much "I am holier than thou, because I know this and this about this"
I also agree though with the people leaving comments such as "cute pic" or "hawt" leave that stuff on myspace and other such sites, DeviantART is an art site and I don't know about them, or you but I come here for artistic critique and appreciation.
But I agree with you on the mislabeling and the less than helpful comments from what it would seem "fan girls"
@ Piggies and Kage: You have to see his side, and look past the emo rampage, it isn't very abstract or surreal, its a self portrait if anything, but I stand beside you in the uniqueness is what ever category.
@ Sean: Don't take my wanting you to re label and stuff as a hack at you or anything, I'm just saying what I think.

Thank you. That's extremely open minded of you to not trash me straight away just because he's your friend, and actually take my point.
Yeah the rants i had about art is because I've seen a bit too much 'myspace' art here in deviant art recently, and it's not a good look. I know the great thing about deviant art is you can see some artists grow in their style and maturity in their work. But when everyone starts posting 'myspace' style snapshots, then we have just lost deviantart to the myspace populous.
As for my Emo rant, that was personal. It might be a bit of a generalization, but most emo enthusiasts are myspace enthusiasts too, and therefore the core of the problem of deviantart being taken over by mediocrity. Don't get me wrong, one of the best deviantart artist, *rache-engel , has a very emo-esque style about him, but is an amazing artist nonetheless.
Anyways... saw your gallery blueelectrictape, it's pretty good.

No I agree there are far too much 'myspace art' on here. Its even worse when theres people who take other peoples pictures off their profiles and up load it here. Even in my short year and a bit since joining deviant art I've seen how its changed. No one can develop their art with comments of "wow hot" or "super cute"
And I've seen rache-engel before, his art does have an emo side to it, but of course that doesn't give it any less meaning.
I would never trash an other artist over a friend with out seeing their point, everyone's opinions matter, for the most part.

To Therico: teen-angst? He doesn't look very angsty to me...
Perhaps he just likes to dye his hair and wear make-up. Nothing against "the man" or anything like that.
To Tickity Tizzock: I am loving the pin-stripe jacket. And the purple seems to suit you very well.

yes, lovely pin-stripe jacket and purple hair... but again, not the point of my comment. This is DeviantART, not DeviantEMO. It's a place to share art works. He claims that this photo is artistic, even categorized it as abstract and surreal, but it is just blurry. I couldn't care less if he wears make up and dyes his hair, i care because he isn't posting any artistic photography but just posts snapshots.
If you're into that go to myspace.com. I saw his other photos like the ones of the clock tower, at least those are attempts of art, i don't care if he can't pull it off, but at least it's better than having a snapshot and calling it abstract art.

There are people who take naked pictures of themselves and call it art. I've seen more and more of those in the Popular area.
Also to some people, art=emo. Everything's emo these days...

holy shit did you just say: art = emo...
no no... art = is a creation of beautiful things, it is an expression of oneself as an artist to express thought provoking work.
Emo = is a fashion trend and lifestyle fad mostly followed by middle-class mellow dramatic emotional kids who thinks they have a hard life. Emo music is like punk on estrogen, with the excessive use of words like bleed, heart, razor blades, autumn, cut, in their lyrics who are sung by extremely uncomfortably high pitched singers.
No, emo is not art. Emo is a fad, and is not a reason to post photos in deviantART. Got emo photos, visit myspace.
And yes, there are a lot of people who take naked pictures of themselves and call it "artistic nude", but really it's pretty much porn. But it's a bit off topic... if you are interested in that debate check this deviantart article: [link]

I said to some people art=emo. It's a broad generalization, I know and I don't agree with it. Most humans have a tendency to generalize. It's annoying, but the truth.

There is nothing abstract about this photo. It's more or less a self taken snap shot that has turned blurry due to shakiness of the arms. Defining the meaning of clarity and trying to add a concept to a snap shot will not make it more artistic in anyway.
What do i see? i see an adolescent teen conforming into this decade's fad to become 'unique'. When you look at yourself in 10 years in old photos you will realize how common that look has become.
