Description
I hadn't seen anyone design or draw the Bit yet, from MLP FIM, so I figured I'd take a shot at designing it!Words on the back of the coin are: Prosperitas, Diligo, Parilitas. Latin for "Prosperity, Love, Equality"

It appears as though you didn't sell all of your coins in the fundraiser, any left over that I could purchase?

That's a somewhat accurate statement, but it's pretty lean. I have about 50 or so left of the thousands that got made, and I'm trying to figure out what to do with them.

Ah, well if you do consider selling them, I'd be up for buying 1 or 2.

How much would it cost to make something like this?

I do not divulge my production costs, and if you somehow manage to find my manufacturer's site it's still more than what's listed because of certain extras (use of a 3D file as a base, die setup fees, 3D images instead of just raised 2d "stamps")

Is this a metalcraft or just digital manipulation?

This particular image is just a 3D digital render, but I have had them made in real life.

They've already been made. High-grade zinc composite with a mirror gold finish. Nothing cheap about them.

That's going to be for an undecided charity at a later date. 1oz solid gold.

dude, even when they used gold coins in the regular moneyflow they never used it in these sizes. A ducat was only 7,5 gram.

Well this isn't a historical coin. Theoretically, I could melt an entire bouillon into a coin and still call it currency.
Perhaps gold plated silver or something. I don't know, I want it to be valuable and unique.

I just don't think a currency where it's "2 bits for an apple" is its weight worth in gold. It seems to me that a bit has a value of no more then a dollar.

Well in that scenario you're also implying that the Equestrian Bit uses the gold standard. There could be an equivalent to the federal reserve in Equestria for all we know.

The gold standard was (along with other noble metal standards) universally used until the beginning of the first world war, that is until a time of massive strife. A country like Equestria would have no reason to abandon the gold standard as it knows both peace and have plenty.
I'm often puzzled why there haven't been any serious attempt to re-establish the gold standard after WWII.
Gold standard is superior to liquid currencies in a number of ways.
But personally if we talk about Equestria, I think that the "Bit" is actually their low level coin, their cent, their shilling, their ΓΈre.
I don't know what their high level coin should be called, but it would make sense if its value was 120 times the value of a bit.
Why?
Because a race without hands would not make the stupid mistake to base their numbersystem on the number of fingers, instead it would be based on what is, quite logically the best base number, and that number is 12.
Why?
Because 12 is twice as awesome as 10.
And why is it twice as awesome? you get one guess.

Looks awesome, but we Do see the face of the bit for a few seconds in one of the episodes, it has a horseshoe on it... seriously though, these look very impressive.

Well, guess I'll cancel the 250 I've had put into production.

well, i'm still figuring out the manufacturing process apparently since Kickstarter failed to deliver. At the very least you'll be able to order one off of shapeways in either matte or shiny gold!

You're only the second person to do this,as far as I know. There's one person on ebay who does them, but a more primitive, almost Celtic bit.
This is very cool and very modern looking, and nicer than some real ones out there.

Intersting, and nicely done!
I wonder how difficult it would be to try carving this in wax sans CNC mill? And would I really want to try? Hmmmm...... Of course, that would also depend on how large they're supposed to be. ^__^
Good luck with production!

I've actually never heard of Maya. What is that one for again?
π: 0 β©: 1
tidalkraken In reply to BronieBlaze [2012-05-07 15:31:56 +0000 UTC]
[link] one of the top two industry standard 3D animation / modeling / VFX packages around. Retardedly expensive but very complete.
However, believe it or not, Blender has some functions that not even Maya has (video editing, image compositing, better sculpting mode, etc). I'd heavily recommend that aspiring 3D artists learn Blender. Maya as well, but it's a different animal.
