I'd seen at the last time many fangirl pictures about Candle Cove.So I dicieded to do this: It shows the difference between the real Candle Cobe by Kris Straub and the Fandom Candle Cove
Kris Straub:
A horror story, about Janice and Percy, it's supposed to be scary and disturbing. All characters except Janice are cheap puppets which looks like falling into piece every minute. Percy is a frightned baby-doll-head-puppet and doesn't act like a pirate.
Fandom:
Cute, nice adventure pirate story with extra characters and a regular manga look. Sad background story and some deaths in there + many space for fangirls.
I know I did three pictures in that style too, but at least I'm honest to myself and know that Candle Cove isn't like that.
What I want to say is: Candle Cove is not an kawaii anime about pirate adventures and romantic sea love stories, it's a disturbing horror story about a 70's puppet children show that had never really existed!

Candle Cove truly has one of the most extreme fandoms in the "Hyping non canon stuff" category I have met so far.
That says something considering I'm in the Gravity Falls and Undertale fandom.

But Candle Cove really was one of the fandoms where I saw the line between canon and fan works where almost non existence, I don't know if it still is like this. Never really was in it (just had lots of inspiration for some pictures because an old friend was completely obsessed with it and didn't stop talking about it xD)

This right here demonstrates the best and the worst of the Candle Cove fandom.
I entirely agree that, like with any horror fandom, there is way too much cutseyness and forced tropes to match their own tastes being put into Candle Cove. I don't like characters being designed to be 'sexy' and I don't like how people see it as a kawaii adventure anime.Β
However (bear with me on this) it's not all bad.
Alot of what the fans latch onto is what the fans have created. And in this case that isn't a bad thing. What started as an amazing horror story with a very simple premise about a disturbing children's show has been developed, through the fans, as a fully realised storyline. There is an entire wiki dedicated to Candle Cove which includes character pages and episode descriptions to the point where if you showed it to someone who did not know the story, they would probably believe this is a real show. And the content of this does not take away from the disturbing nature of the original story! I mean most of those episode descriptions are just messed up! It actually helps to develop Candle Cove without losing the original horror of what made it so great in the first place. For any fandom to accomplish that is incredibly rare and should be celebrated!
I really wish we could find some middle ground in the fandom. Something that stays true to the style and nature of the original piece but still openly accepts these new ideas to expand the Candle Cove universe.Β

Well unfortunately it's something that happens with any fandom. By definition a fandom will put their own ideas into the skeleton of the original. Sometimes it works, othertimes it doesn't. We just have to accept that and move on.Β

I'll admit, I'm a fangirl of Candle Cove. I mean... The characters are perfect to write fanfiction... And create ships. Like I already ship Percy/Janice. I roleplay as Milo from time to time. But all fandoms have something like this, a crazy fangirl side. I love the original story as well, and I respect it. But the Candle Cove fanartists I know of, including me, don't mean to turn it into some 'kawaii shojo manga anime cutesy' thing. For example, take horror-movie fandoms into consideration. You can find LOVE STORIES about Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees. Even Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre. and Nightmare before Christmas, one of Burton's most internet-famous works, has a strong element of love in it. I'm like you, I like to draw fanart in anime style, but I'm honest to myself and know that the characters are different. Everyone has their own way of showing love for their favorite characters.
Also: I'm just happy that the Candle Cove fandom isn't as crazy as the Jeff the Killer fandom (AND FOR GOD'S SAKE I HOPE IT STAYS THAT WAY). Yes, I was also madly in love with Jeff the Killer. But at least I was smart about it... Pretty much, JTK has gone to utter shit because of all the fangirls involved, excuse my language. From what I see, over half the fans are tweenage girls who went to the whole "emo" side of the tracks instead of sticking with One Direction. I feel somewhat ashamed. We original fangirls had some sort of idea in our heads of 'tweaking' Jeff's appearance, and now he's pretty much Andy Sixx. Since he now looks like Andy Sixx instead of the white potato that we all know and love, it opened a door for the... outsiders. SOME OF THESE FANGIRLS ARE MORE CRAZY THAN ME. GO LOOK UP NINA THE KILLER ON GOOGLE. I DARE YOU. D: wait no i take that back

I personally think Candle Cove would make a fairly interesting TV show nowadays, or even an anime. But people keep forgetting that it would still have to retain those eerie, creepy qualities that made it Candle Cove. Meaning nO TRACE OF SHOUJO. If anything, the most accurate description of a Candle Cove anime would be a mix of One Piece, Soul Eater, and Tim Burton.

I was actually sorta planning to... "write" Candle Cove? If that's the word? Like, it follows the original show's ideas and plot and stuff (mostly the supposed "Drastic Team-up" and "Red Mary" story arcs.) I was going to include the other characters too, but only because I don't really know how to work with only 4 to 5 characters. I'll only be sure to include characters relevant to the plot though, such as Red Mary (duh) and Sariah (maybe... she won't get a whole lot of screentime though.)
