Funny...I've played Sonic '06 and I've never seen Mephiles look like that.
I've heard of his "liquid" form, but I don't remember ever seeing it.

you see it in the mission with shadow and silver in the past of the game where the king was experimenting on solarius spliting him into iblis and mephalis. you hear silver go 'THAT's mephalis?" during it. he's like a thick black oil.
