Description
The phenomena of aristocratic hunting as a stylized pastime and sport had already occured by the time of the middle ages, and would continue to be a popular kind of leisure all the way up until early modern times. More than a pastime and sport, it also presented the aristocracy with essential training for warfare and was also an arena of social interaction and acted as a measure of social prestige and privilege. As tools, the hunters needed a horn to communicate with the rest of the hunting party, as well as weaponry. By the time of the sport's emergence, clubs, spears and bows were used with crossbows appearing later during the 15th century. By the time of the introduction of firearms during the early modern period, hunting rifles became the prefered kind of weaponry, which could often be richly decorated. The hunters also used themselves of domesticated animals during their hunts. Horses were essential to catch up with the prey, as was the usage of hounds and falcons or hawks to track and hunt down the prey. Most of the quarry included wild larger, wild animals, such as boar, deer, bear, fox, badgers or otters.
