Description
The Stand of the Swiss Guard (6 May 1527) was an event during the Sack of Rome the same date.
Since a time before the Papal States and the Vatican had been part of a faction, led by pope Clement VII (1478-1534) that opposed the increasing rule of the Habsburg dynasty under Charles V (1500-1558) during the 1520's. During the War of the League of Cognac (1526–1530) an army of Spannish and Holy Roman Imperial mercenaries and landsknechts, led by the former Constable of France, Charles III of Bourbon (1490-1527) sacked Rome on the 6th of May 1527 to gain loot for the ongoing war. The city was almost defenseless and it was a fact that the Pope had to flee. To secure the Pope's escape to Castel St. Angelo, 189 Papal Swiss Guards, under the leadership of Captain Kaspar Röist (-1527) positioned themselves outside of St. Peter's Basilica to defend the church long enough for the Pope to flee. The Swiss Guards were severely outnumbered and were almost anihilated. Captain Röist himself was killed by Spannish mercenaries in front of his own wife. Some survivors, accompanied by a band of refugees, retreated to the steps of the basilica. Many were massacred and only about forty survived to fight back the Habsburg forces. After the city's sack and the Guards' stand, Rome was subjected to a brief occupation by the Habsburg forces, who commited several outrages against the population and its religious monuments. The Pope was allowed to incorporate the surviving Swiss into his new, Habsburg-authorized guard, but the Swiss Guard was reinstalled in its entirety after the occupation.
