This classic rivalry was even present in early fanart that I saw in GamePro magazines.
There was one fanart depicting Mario being tied up, and Sonic showing off a Chaos Emerald. Β That shows that Sonic got the upper hand over Mario.
Another fanart I saw was Mario riding Yoshi, and Yoshi bit Sonic's head off, leaving him headless and bloody. Β That shows that Mario got the upper hand over Sonic, although in a bloody, gorey way.
I hope I didn't gross you out with blood and gore references when I mentioned the second fanart, Gustavo.

Yeah, it even lasted during the N64/Dreamcast/PS2 era.
People have their own decisions on who they like the most. Still, despite this rivarly I like those two.

I'm really sorryΒ for that, Gustavo.Β That was how the original artist depicted in the second fanart I mentioned, even if that mature scene isn't appropriate for many of us who see Nintendo's games as kid- and family-friendly.
