Description
Last September I started an internship at Ghosbot Inc. know most for there work on the Esurances commercials and Five Iron Frenzy Music Video "The Wizard Needs Food". During that time I was given a side project among my regular work on various flash games. Roque had an idea based off my Jack and the Beanstalk project and wanted to try and do something similar. Taking a fairy tale or classic story and twisting it, he gave me a list of 10 or 12 genres along with an equal number of classic stories. When I saw the Nutcracker I knew that was the one for me. Which naturally lead to the idea of Steampunk, it was also an I idea that I'd never seen anyone attempt with this story. The Nutcracker is a story I've always held close to my heart in many ways.In grade school we had plays and in the 4th grade I played Judge Drosselmeyer and the following year I played the Nutcracker. Although I never got to know my grandfather on my mothers side this was one if not his favorite play, giving it even more meaning. I still have my own Nutcrackers given to me by my folks on display at my work desk.
So here's the first batch of thumbnails were I did my initial exploration into the project. The first line being the Nutcracker and in following order, Judge Drosselmeyer, Clara, and the Rats.

This whole project is amazing. Will you be doing more of the characters later on? I'd be interested to see all of them as you've envisioned it.

All the finished designs are up with color and variations, as for returning to this in the future I have no immediate plans. Maybe some day I'll do some illustrations of these characters in scenes but for now thats it. Glad you dig the project it was a lot of hard work.

Thanks these are always one of my favorite steps. I love working with black and white in this blocked out format.
