Mario was an influence but so were many other modern games.

its pretty clean Β design tho, its very hard to create something complety new (and useable, not talking about abstrac white dots) that wouldnt resemble of something else. i think its mostly about the hat shape that makes it so much "mario alike"

While I've never played Spelunky it was an influence when I was designing this character as was Mario along with various other things.

I would agree with GHENGIZZ, but the character more or less reminds me of Wimpy from Popeye (most certainly his nose).

The closest I can think of is Paperboy but that's a little different.
