Leading the chaseNuala was very fond of snow. It chilled her legs to the bone when it was this deep, but she was tall enough now to bound across it, every time sinking in up to her chest. It was absolutely exhausting, but she loved it. Nobody could beat her in a race at the best of times, but nobody even tried in the snow.
When a fresh blanket fell, she delighted in making tracks, kicking up the powdery flakes behind her as she ran. But it wasn’t long before all the snow around the herd’s winter grazing was trampled and brown, and snow was no fun when it was soggy. The guards had learned all her tricks for slipping away unseen - she was five years old, they thought she would have grown out of it by now - but she still had one trick up her sleeve.
As soon as the snow began that night, she was gone. Some would swear blind that she simply disappeared on the spot, but she had no such magical powers. When the snow was falling, she just seemed to be invisible. Her pale winter coat was almost the
