Description My favorite J-RPG from my childhood This is a polymer clay figurine of the main character, made fully from FIMO, using different colors of clay. Her sword is a separate piece that can be detached.
I spent a few days on her, there were about 10 rounds of oven-baking during the process.

Hi ! I'm here from ProjectComment !
I was so glad to see some Fimo here ! I do enjoy too making some figurine, and I can see you spend quite some time on it !
It's nice that you put some different angle shots, and with your hand so we can see the actual size.
I really like her helmet, it's cool looking and work pretty well. But it's a bit weird for me as we can't see her eyebrows (Did she have any ?) I think it's making her lacking a bit of life. Her face is all cute and the mouth is really really great, but I think that maybe painting some varnish on her eyes would be a nice ending touch, maybe them looking more wet. I can't see really well but does she have really white fimo for her eyes ? It seems like it looks a lot like her skin color. Her eyes area is a bit her "main" issue at least for myself. Aside of that, her eyes expression is really nice and determined !
I enjoy her pose, ready for battle ! I wish I could see closer some details as the bottom of her skirt (seems really nice and interesting what you did there) as well as her feet. Is it like some ninja shoes ? Or a boot ?
I think the hair is nice, maybe it can be even more braid looking (but gosh I know how it could be complicated and how patient you would have to be) so it's just nitpicking.

It's a nice touch and idea that you can detached her sword, it's really impressive ! After looking a bit for her sword I see how well looking it is, but it could have been more sharp and "right". You can try putting some thin wire, it's not visible when you put fimo on it ! I often do that to have something that need to stay perfectly in form.

I don't know this character so I can't judge much on that, but I did look up for her. (So now I think I know it was boot and not ninja shoe xD) I think you made her expression really well, and I like the changes you made.
You made a pretty dynamic looking figure and I think it's not something easy. It's a really good work !

Thanks for such a detailed comment!

About brows - yes, she does, but the helmet seems to cover them completely I tried to follow the original model, so didn't have much choice... yet the model in game is too pixelized, so maybe I could modify this part a little.
Varnish on her eyes - oh, I didn't think of that, great advice! I may even do that now, since she's staying with me anyway. Thanks!
There was probably white around irises, but I might have mistaken it with porcelain white (which is translucent, so doesn't show clear white color). My bad then!
Her feet are in fantasy battle boots, looking like her body mail (oh, you've probably seen the reference, like you say later ) - yeah, probably could take some detailed pictures here.
I will pay attention to hair too in my next figurines. I'm not very experienced here, because in mixed-media models (my main stuff) you always make hair and fabrics from different materials, not sculpt them.
The sword is really a lacking part, you're right - it doesn't have wire frame. It was supposed to remain translucent, but the FIMO was old and dry, starting to crack easily and I messed up the form quite a bit before baking. Anyway, there's a problem and I have to work on weapons better the next time.
Thanks for checking the ref and for suggesting all the useful advice. And I'm happy that you like how it turned out! Especially - because you seem to know a lot about polymer clay

Hello, I am a member of ProjectComment , and like any other member of the group that has reviewed this work for the "Everything Must Go 2017" contest, I can assure you that my intentions are without malice.

The Good: Despite never playing any games in the Valkyrie Profile series in my life, I can still say that this clay figurine is still really well made. The flow of the clothing look authentic and the main body is very well detailed, from the eyes and face to the armor.

What could probably use improvement: I suppose that my only real problem is a minor gripe with the sword, which doesn't really look all that great with the blade compared to the rest of the figurine, but again, that's only a minor gripe.

Overall: If the character sprites look as good as this figurine does, I just might be tempted to track down a copy of a more recent Valkyrie Profile game just to try it out (you can shut off PermaDeath in the game, right?). The end results do show that you really put in the effort to make this as well made as possible, and for that, I commend you.

Thanks! Happy to hear that you find it detailed and well-made!

I see that the sword is pulling its quality down... I will be extra careful with weapons next time Happy that the clothes turned out well - I like how skirt looks, my first attempt at sculping fabric

It's good to know that you're interested in the game! You can probably get it for PS emulator (ePSXe for example) now. And here's how it looks in game, btw: iv1.lisimg.com/image/3425201/5…
On suggested starter difficulty level (normal, not easy - easy cuts the storyline >__> ) it's very playable if you are familiar with JRPG genre. And emulator allows easy saves.

Hi from  ProjectComment! I'm commenting as part of the  Everything Must Go contest .

You did an amazing job with this sculpture - I'm amazed by the amount of detail you put into Lenneth's armor, from the ornate metal decorations to the folds in her skirt. I really like Lenneth's determined expression and detailed eyes as well; it adds personality to the sculpture and makes it more endearing . Also - I'm very impressed by the size of your sculpture; I didn't expect it to be palm-sized - I haven't worked with polymer clay yet, but my impression is that a lot of materials and work went into this piece! You've done an amazing job !

I have a couple of suggestions for this piece .

First, the presentation. Individually, each photo is great - the poses are interesting, the lighting is excellent, and each picture gives me new information about your sculpture. However, the collage as a whole is a bit distracting due to the lack of borders between the photos, as well as the large disparity between the white and black background. I suggest using borders so that the edge transitions don't distract from your piece, and using a similar background for your entire collage. Also, one minor thing - I suggest putting your watermark on the left side of the photo, to minimize the visual contrast when moving from the left to right side of the collage (as you want the visual transitions between photos to be as smooth as possible).

Second, I think that some parts of the sculpture could use more detail, such as the hair. Specifically, I think that you can add stronger lines to Lenneth's hair to match how it's depicted in the official art (ex. this drawing ), and also to match the amount of detail you've put into her armor. One way to do this is to create several separate strands of hair, add textures to them, then add them to the head. Here is a tutorial that may help with this .

Hope this helps, and keep up the excellent work!

Thanks for the compliment, I'm happy to hear that this looks like an impressive work - I spent quite a while on her If you can tell the face expression it's great! It's a chibi, and quite a simplistic face design, so this is good to hear. And thanks for being so considerate and check the reference for the character!

I was not sure where to put signature, but what you say sounds reasonable, I will keep that in mind! About photo background - my bad, I didn't have enough good pictures, and I wanted to show her on hand for size comparison, but I totally agree that it sticks out being the only one with white back. Do you think borders would look better for separating photos? I  might try it.

And thanks for sharing the tutorial, I'll check it later I haven't noticed the problem with her hair, but now, when you say it looks more unclear compared to her armor, then maybe  the detalization is not good enough...
BTW, my problems with hair and sword were caused (along with my lack of skill and laziness ) by clay quality, it was very dry and started to crack when I shaped it too intensely. So it's best to buy only fresh clay if I want things to be more accurate...

Thanks again for your detailed comment!

(I'm commenting from ProjectComment  because of their contest)
I recommend smoothing out the fabric and metal, and maybe try to spend more time on the eyes. Try to use a ruler or something on the sword. Good luck!

TigRaido In reply to ATouchOfSalt [2017-12-22 07:46:45 +0000 UTC]

Well, I see that the sword is certainly a problem most people see... Well, yes, I should probably be more accurate more time And with smoothing textures.
About eyes - I'm not experienced in making eyes from clay (I usually prefer glass beads), so I'll keep in mind that I need to do it more carefully next time. Thanks for paying attention to these details!

This is a cute little Lenneth.
Love the face and the eyes. Beautiful choice of colors.
Maybe sanding some edges would make the little details look softer but i do not know if you can sand down fimo like clay.
It is something i would be very happy to get as a gift.

Thank you for the comment!
Answering your question: yes, it's possible, I don't remember if I did it on this one, but probably not enough anyway. I will keep it in mind.
Happy to hear that it looks like a gift someone would actually want! I made her for myself because it's my favourite game, but at the same time I tried to see if I could make a good example of a figurine

i dont know shit about making figures but it seems like you could make the edges more straight and detailed. some of the edges like the blade seem shakey and not smoothe. maybe try cutting seperate pieces for the of clay and then attaching it on later. this should make it more smothe. this video might be helpful www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LNVqS…

Thank you for the comment! You're right, I could have tried to do something about that blade (I'm not sure where else it's screwed up, but the blade I see quite clearly myself You mean things like edges of her pauldrons and other pieces of armour?)
I believe I know what mistakes I made while making the blade, but anyway, thank you for the video, it looks useful and motivating (and it's always best to have different sources of information)

UPD: watched the video, it shows some tricks I haven't seen before! That's great

it is lovely, I'm quite curious at which points did you bake it and can those eyes handle it or where they added on later.

TigRaido In reply to TrC450 [2017-11-18 18:44:45 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I baked it a lot of times during process, to make sure that any difficult part wouldn't get damaged after it's finished. First parts (head, arms, boots, body base) were baked separately, then the whole figurine - after combining and adding details (skirt and some pieces of armor). Hair and skirt needed 2 or 3 rounds of baking and correcting, because there were many problems with their texture. It was quite a process Luckily, FIMO polymer clay allows repeated baking.
The eyes are made from FIMO as well as everything else. I usually prefer glass beads for eyes (which I add before baking), but here I wanted to follow anime style, so I just made the iris, pupil and highlights from different colors of clay.
Anyway, thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like it

Would not have guessed, thought the eyes were like doll eyes from glass/plastic, I'm new with polymer and I'm still struggling making the skin smooth, also it attracts tons on dust which I'm not sure what to do with. Also details keep changing as I hold to figure so I was wondering if you bake legs (or whatever the figure is standing on first) and move up from there so the details dont change from gravity and all the touching.

TigRaido In reply to TrC450 [2017-11-19 10:30:45 +0000 UTC]

About baking - yes, that's the exact point, you finish something and you don't want it to deform so you bake it right away. Also, you can try to bake things horizontally, on something soft (like a bunch of tissues or some people use cotton / sponge) or if you have foil/wire armature inside, you can use it to fixate parts inside your oven. Now I came to conclusion that with FIMO it's best to bake it little by little all the time (it doesn't need to go full cycle, half the time is often enough to make a detail harden on the surface and continue working). I usually finish some parts, put them for baking and while they bake and cool down I work on other parts. Or another object
About smooth skin - oh, it's a pain, I totally agree I suggest latex surgical gloves (it's tricky to get used to them though, hands feel more clumsy, but things get so much cleaner if you get a hang of it!). Latex gloves also help to work with different colors without color sticking to your hands and mixing with the next clay you use. If you work barehanded, gently wiping your model with wet cloth to clean the dirt and fingerprints is good too. And it's better to work on a clean surface: I use sheets of paper, and sometimes - a flat piece of glass, which can be washed before work. And, last thing - if the model is baked, you can remove dirt on its surface with fine sandpaper, but it will make it more rough.

Anyway, it took a while before I found out how to work with complex figurines (still there's much to learn ), so I hope some of this helps you and you won't have to go through all of it on your own

ProjectComment:

The face looks blob-like and unrefined. e anatomy is fine and I like e colour scheme. Very good choice in background by the way. It works well to contrast with the character and make her stand out. Good to see someone supporting something they love.

TigRaido In reply to adam-ant2 [2017-10-31 23:53:32 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the details! The face looks this way because it was a pixelized chibi model originally, but maybe I should have made the nose more visible and overall adapted it better for the sculpture, if that's the problem you're talking about.
Happy to know that background looks good and helps to highlight the work - I'm not good at making photos of my craft, and backgrounds are often hard to set...

I always had special affinity for Valkyries I have 2 Valkyrie OCs, one is very daring and cocky while the other is more like Lenneth.
Anyway I always wished I could play Valkyrie Profile but I didn't hear about the game until later when they stopped selling it But I do like this sculpture of her! She's so cute

You know, the original game is so old, you can easily find an image somewhere on the internet, and run it on an emulator (I like ePSXe) on android or PC That is, if you wish to know it better. But, like I said, it's really old, unless you're into 2D JRPG games

Anyway, thanks for the kind words, I'm glad that you like it! It took quite a while to finish it, but I'm rather happy with her too
