Pepakura? I'd use it, but it sounds way too complex for my tastes. I'd rather just do the good ol' fashioned cardboard thing. Then when I'd finish, I'd vacuum-form it for smoothness and strength.

you know that you can fiberglass and bondo pepakura if you use card stock and make plastic molds from it right. I've been using cardboard for years and actually work as a vacuum-former and a manufacturing plant if your going to vacuum form you might want to use something a little stronger than card board like wood or metal molds.

Right, right. Well, there's a lot of stuff out there to make costumes out of nowadays. I've noticed that for different costume things, people use different things. Star Wars costumers religiously use vaccum-formed armor. Can't blame them, a lot of SW stuff is smooth and plastic looking. Halo costumers like to use fiberglass or cardboard, Predator costumers all use plastic cut from big plastic buckets. Anime cosplayers use foam and fabric on freaking EVERYTHING. sometimes, people sacrifice practicality so that everything on their costume is the same stuff. I'm working on a Galactic Clone Marine costume from star wars, and while everybody vaccuum forms everything, I'm using sintra on as much as I can, for simplicity's sake. The helmet will be vaccuum formed, as will the chestpeice and boot covers. everything else is marine vinyl and I'll carry a cardboard and PVC gun. Sorry for the rant.

Im not that good there are quite a few people doing this type of thing, if you want to do this I learned everything on how to make this on [link] in the forum plus where to download the program and files to make an entire master chief costume and more, you have to look around but its all there and its free and it may look over whelming at first but really its not

yeah I know what you mean I had to go to a friends house and he made me keep the garage open half way lucky he had a couple of space heaters which actually kept me somewhat warm and helped dry the fiberglass quickly when I was finished, but yeah costuming is my passion and winter just ruins it when you don't have a workshop

I used the same template for mine, fibreglassing the thing is hard under the brow line but it's worth it when you have got it all strong . The overall best bit is putty filling the curved shape of the dome into it But yeah, excellent work fellow Spartan!

TIMECON In reply to Zerebin [2008-01-18 14:47:34 +0000 UTC]

so are you actually filling it with putty? is that to get ride of the fiberglass smell because after smelling that I think I'm just going to cast my in plastic helmet when its finished and possible just keep this one as a paper weight.
