There are two sides to every coin.

From the best of families. Constance was never a normal girl. None of the other children in the nursery would play with her ,due to the misfortune that she was born blind in one eye. "She is the Devil." the nurse would tell the other children, and therefore always left behind. As she grew up , her coming out ball passed with no suitors lining up for her hand. Constance, true to her name stood firm and waited. Time passed and finally one young lord came, visiting her garden every day, he laid a poppy on her windowsill.

Every night she would bestow upon him a kiss and drop into his pocket one pebble.

He called often and her father was hopeful for an arrangement to be made. But her mother wanted a better position for her only daughter. She arranged a marriage that was to her liking. To stop Constance from running away with the young lord, her mother forbid him entrance into their home and locked the high garden gate.

Her selected husband, although well meaning did not understand her. He spoiled her with lavish gifts in hopes of winning her love. He was a likeable , honorable man but he wasnt very observant. Her heart, was to him a mystery.

Constance waited by her window for the last time. For on the morning she would be married. She lay in bed, so much had happened in only a months time that she feared her true love had forgotten her. As she cried bitter tears a small click caught her ear. Another and another. She ran to the window to find her lover had climbed the garden gate and took use of each pebble she had given him.

"I have come for you, please say you will away with me dearest Constance."

The next morning all that was to be found of the lovely beauty was a poppy left on her pillow.
