Maybe- I hadn't considered it before. At the time I was really into Marvel Adventures Avengers - I don't know a lot about Janet Van Dyne outside that continuity.

Hank Pym isn't the most mentally stable guy in the world, and at one point, he hit his wife. Like Jean Grey dieing, this has been blown wildly out of proportion, so that he beats her at every turn.
