Hidden away in a twisting cave system lay an old twoleg’s nest. Made of wood and rock, the nest was slowly being taken over by the earth, sunken into the ground it once stood proudly on. Grass grew between floorboards and moss covered walls, slowly covering what used to be. It was a perfect place to call home. Many small spaces and holes lead into a larger cavern room, where the cats of MoonClan had claimed as their camp. It took perhaps a few sunrises to make the dens feel just right, but everything was finally setting into place.
In a concealed crevice that was hidden under draping lichen, was a small warm den, filled with soft moss, leaves, and feathers, making the perfect nest. Two figures sat together, side by side, sharing an intimate moment while they could, before the duties of the day tore them away from each other. Timidbreeze, the smaller tuxedo female, rasped her tongue across her mate's forehead in a gentle and smooth motion. She continued this until he stopped his slight shaking. A purr rumbled deep in his throat, greeted by one of her own. “Better?” She asked, green eyes giving him a once-over to be sure he seemed okay. The tabby tom nodded, rubbing his cheek against hers, “Yes. Thank you.” She gave him a look, one of disbelieving. “Fallenstar, your nightmares are getting worse,” she stated, “Maybe Cloudjumper has something you can take to help you sleep better?” He waved her off with a swish of his tail as he stood, “I’m fine,” he reassured her, “They’re just bad dreams. I can handle them.” Timidbreeze watched him push the lichen back to peer out at the camp, her ears flicking down. “Talk to her at least,” she asked him, almost pleaded, “for me?”
He turned his head back towards her, seeing the light from outside illuminate his mate. StarClan, she was beautiful. He didn’t say anything for a moment, but finally opened his mouth to do so, words catching in his throat, "Alright, fine. I'll go speak with her now-"
“Fallenstar!”
The leader stole away- after being startled and jumping from the loud shouting that consumed the caves- and questioningly looked to Nightcatcher, the black tom who came dashing into the center of camp. Many cat’s peered from their dens and lifted their heads from their breakfasts, staring in awe and confusion at the interruption. He was drenched in water from the rain outside, and his sides heaved greatly from running. In his jaws he held a kit, the kitten’s eyes wide and body shaking. Timidbreeze pushed passed Fallenstar to see what was going on, her form freezing at the sight of her clanmate and this kit- who looked just liked him. He set the kitten down between his front paws, panting heavily, and his eyes met with Fallenstar’s, “D-Dreamfrost! She’s taken over RainClan!”
The quiet was suddenly filled with gasps and whispers, a few cats speaking up over the others;
“How do you know this?”
“How is this possible?”
“What has happened?”
“Who is the kit?”
“Where did he get the kit?”
Following suit came a group of cats from the darkness of the cave’s hidden entrance. A large cat, recognized as Scorpionfang, lead the group, a smaller spotted cat draped over his back. Hiccupstar. Berryrose and Scalewing came into view next, a small group of kits in their jaws and between their feet. Behind them came Viperstrike and Sunflowerwish, both looking frazzled and upset. An eery silence filled the camp.
Cloudjumper was roused from her den at the scent of blood. She peeked her head out at the scene, puzzled for a moment about what was happening. Swiping her tail over Irispaw's muzzle, waking her apprentice, she whispered lowly, "Gather some herbs and cobwebs. Something's happened." Too sleepy and confused to argue, the blue colored she-cat did as she was told, collecting poppy seeds and lavender. The pair of Medicine Cats exited the den and approached the newcomers slowly, Cloudjumper hanging back slightly.
Coming to his senses, Fallenstar approached Scorpionfang, a strong demeanor taking the place of the confused one. “What happened?” His voice was hard. Timidbreeze picked up the faint crack of panic on his words. Scorpionfang stared straight ahead, his eyes unseeing, new scars, still healing, covered his face. Upon seeing this, Timidbreeze gasped. Dear StarClan, what had happened in RainClan?
Berryrose turned into a blubbering mess, tears streaming down her face faster than she could speak, her words muddled with hiccups, “I don’t know- she just- we were-” she coughed and laid down, hiding her head under her paws. Scalewing set the kit she held down, Opalkit, and looked up at Fallenstar with watering eyes, “Dreamfrost attacked Hiccupstar. Falconscreech and Venomgrin started attacking others- it was chaos. We escaped, barely-”
"Falconscreech? No- he wouldn't!" Timidbreeze's voice rose sharply in disbelief. Scorpionfang hissed, "He would! He's the one who did this to me- who blinded me! He probably killed Russetmoon, and has probably killed many more warriors since we've been gone!" He angrily shot a look towards Timidbreeze, picking up her scent. She laid her ears back, her eyes wide with shock, "But.. why?"
"Because murder runs in his blood I suppose," Scorpionfang spat, his words dripping with scorn. Timidbreeze gasped, her mouth hanging open, "How- how dare you-!"
"Okay, stop it," Scalewing stuttered, raising her voice as best she could. She stood between Scorpionfang and Timidbreeze, her mother, trying to kill the tension, "He.. was willing to attack me too, mama," she said with shaky breaths, looking at Timidbreeze. Fallenstar felt his jaw clench, his claws digging into the ground beneath him, "That's enough," he said slowly, "We don't have time to argue."
“Right, so will you shut up? Hiccupstar is going to die if we don’t get him help right now,” Scorpionfang interrupted, shrugging the limp body from his shoulders onto the ground- sort of gently. “Who knows how many lives he’s lost already- I don't feel like arguing anyways.” He bared his fangs, in an attempt to look threatening perhaps. Fallenstar nodded, looking at Cloudjumper, who was standing nearby, waiting until she was called over. With an approving nod from her leader, she hurried to Hiccupstar, glancing him over. Irispaw teetered close behind, sleep still in her eyes from the rude wake-up call, cobwebs held carefully in her jaw. Together they assessed the situation, placing cobwebs on the small freckled tom's neck, where the horrid wound was.
Trying to defuse the situation, Fallenstar looked to Timidbreeze, “Take Berryrose and her kits to the nursery,” he instructed her. Hesitant, she stared down at Hiccupstar. Dreamfrost.. did that. She attacked her leader, tried to kill him- all for what? To be leader? Why did Falconscreech follow her lead? Did she promise that he would be named deputy? Shock was taking root in her body, numbing her all over. Fallenstar pushed his way in front of her, breaking her eye contact with Hiccupstar's form, "Timidbreeze?" He asked, the sound of worry in his words. She blinked, looking up at him. "Y-yes, Fallenstar?" He licked her cheek, "Take Berryrose and her kits to the nursery," he repeated. She did nothing, but only for a moment, for then she finally nodded and obeyed. Moving towards the blue queen, she leaned down to help her to her paws. Berryrose wasn't cooperating very well, refusing to leave Hiccupstar's side. "He needs me!" She sobbed, "I can't leave him- is he going to die?" Suddenly Bluejay appeared out of nowhere, at Berryrose’s other side, lending a paw to help her shaking sister walk. “Berry,” she said, her voice strong, “Calm down. Hiccup will be fine, you need to lie down somewhere-”
"But Hiccupstar," Berryrose tried to argue, choking on a sob. Bluejay used her paw to wipe at her little sisters face, "Shut up you cry-baby. He'll be fine. Let the Medicine Cat's do their job. You'll just be in the way." Timidbreeze glared at Bluejay, "Don't talk to her like that," she started to say, but Berryrose nodded, "Y-yeah. Okay. I-" she gasped, then started to sob again, "Loyalkit and Roaringkit are back there still, in RainClan," she blubbered. Bluejay looked down at the litter of kittens who were scared and confused, huddling around Berryrose's paws. There were an awful lot. "Are the bigger ones Lapis's kits?" She stared at them, then looked back up at Berryrose, "Where is Lapis? Where's mom and dad? And Coldshiver? Are they all back there still?"
Berryrose's lower lip quivered before she burst into more tears.

It took a while for Nightcatcher to calm his mate down, neither one of them wanting to leave Hiccupstar’s side. But for the kits sake, they needed to. It was a bitter reunion, the two of them laying in a hurried make-shift nest, the kits finally settled down and sleeping between them. The ones who couldn't sleep lay silently, not wanting to upset their mother even more.
Sitting in the center of camp, Fallenstar listened to his daughter's recap of what happened. Scalewing was being surprisingly calm in all of this, her explanation only sounding strained or stuttered in a few areas. Perhaps it had to do with her being RainClan's deputy now. She knew she had a lot of responsibility on her shoulders. Fallenstar felt odd, seeing her this way. Several moons ago, she wasn't much bigger than his paw. It was.. unreal. Even with all this chaos and stressful atmosphere, he couldn't help but feel pride in his chest. The prideful-parent feeling vanished as soon as it arrived when he was bumped into as someone sat down besides him. He fought against the urge to push the heavy tom away from him. It was hard. Scorpionfang was not his favorite cat. But besides the bad blood between them, he ignored it, knowing it was petty to bring it up. It was obvious that they needed to work together. They couldn’t leave RainClan under Dreamfrost’s control.
Wishspirit wanted to remain calm, but his pacing just made everyone more anxious. “Why didn’t StarClan warn us about this?” He asked finally, knowing it was what was on everyone’s mind. Fallenstar looked at his paws, “Maybe they did, or tried to. We haven’t had a way to communicate with them for moons. Just recently we found the Moon Springs- perhaps we were too late to get their message.” It was obvious neither of them believed his lame explanation.
“What does it matter?” Scorpionfang growled, “Even if we did get warned, they would have warned us with some cryptic riddles that we wouldn’t have been able to figure out anyways. But that’s not the point- we need to attack Dreamfrost and Falconscreech, and whoever else is working with them.” Fallenstar’s heart felt heavy, knowing his son was apart of this. StarClan, he had always known that Dreamfrost was a bad influence. Maybe he should have done something to keep them apart? But now it was too late. His son, was no longer his son.
Sitting in silence for what seemed like forever, a voice from outside the group finally spoke up, “We need to let the other clans know.” Fallenstar glanced down at his daughter, Morningfrost. Standing next to her was Vixenfire, the twins sharing the same solemn expression. They had heard. He wanted to tell them that it was okay, but it wasn’t. “That’s a good idea,” Wishspirit piped in, “We should send messengers to the other clans. Have the leaders and deputies meet us here. Dreamfrost is a threat to all the clans, not just RainClan.” Scalewing nodded, “I agree. I’ll take a group with me to FireClan.” Morningfrost stood as tall as she could, “I’ll run to SnowClan,” she volunteered, "With Vixenfire." Nightcatcher came up behind them, “I’ll take a group to DawnClan,” he offered. Wishspirit nodded, “And I’ll go to GladeClan.”
Fallenstar stood, hesitant on sending three of his children off to other clans, but he knew it was what had to be done. He took a deep breath, “It’s decided then. Leave immediately. Let the leaders know this is urgent- we’re all threatened by Dreamfrost. By RainClan.” With the meeting adjourned, the messengers gathered senior warriors and vanished out of the caves into the rain. Thunder rang overhead.
Standing alone now, Fallenstar stared out of the entrance at the lightning in the sky.
Just when he thought he had a grip on his nightmares, it looked like a new one was crawling out of the darkness towards him, and this one was unpredictable. That scared him more than he’d like to admit.
