Description
An eagle hunts for breakfast in the fog along the Ohio River. It has been identified by the WVDNR as a golden eagle. This guy was huge! When he landed on this guardrail about 10 meters from me it sounded like a construction crew locking vice grips on it

Ok, this side of him looks even more "Bald" Eagle... See the really light plumage just above the shoulder at the base of his neck... I have never seen that on a Golden... it is much more solid gold at least on the ones out here.

I agree. Even better shots of his tail look more like the bald eagle.

I am about 90% sure in my mind that it's a bald eagle, and a huge, healthy one. Good news for us! They started nesting on Dupont plant property about 40 miles south when I worked for Dupont about 10 years ago. A friend of mine who was public relations had her hands full protecting their privacy. Since then we've seen adults flying over the golf course just 100 meters or so from this site. I'm glad I notified the DNR, as maybe it's a sign there's a nest around here

Very cool. Supposedly there is some recovery in the Bald Eagle population here, but I still have not seen one at the lake... just the Ospreys, and I have not seen a Golden in quite a while.

It made me shake and my palms got sweaty! The jury is still out, juvenile bald eagle or golden eagle? Do you know which?

I'd say it's a Juvenile Bald Eagle. The white markings around the nose and beak along with the white bits around the neck make me think this guy is attempting to grow in his white feathers. Besides, Bald Eagles are big fishers while Golden's normally aren't.

I'm leaning that way also, and I was eager to hear your opinion. I emailed the WV Dept of Natural Resources and attached a photo, as they have asked to be notified of sightings.

Glad I could assist. I'm pretty sure it's a Bald Eagle. You'll have to tell me when the WV Dept of Natural Resources gets back to you!
