Description Viking Glass, New Martinsville WV. At one time this was where some of the world's finest and most desirable glassware was made. For those of you how may know glass, this is where Candlewick was made. The Kennedy Center in DC, Pebble Beach Country Club, and the catering service for the Grammys and Academy Awards used Candlewick exclusively. My former wife worked there and took orders for glassware from William Shatner, Brooke Shields, Ed McMahon, and several sheiks from the middle east.

Well, Grandpa probably never pillaged a day in his honest life but I'm sure someone in his family tree did!

Great shot, but a more interesting story, Tim--not taking anything away from your shot, but it seems like it would be a great place for a John Cougar Mellancamp video circa 1985. Just pick a song from the 'Scarecrow' album and film it in front of and around this place. It would fit right in.

A lot has already been said here about the shame it is that it's no longer operating and I agree with that--it is quite a shame and really, as Bill Engvall would put it, 'Here's Your Sign.'

excellent work, Tim

I've always loved candlewick pieces with the glass beading. Is it closed now? Did they move production to China?

Thats a great photo and a wonderful use of candlewick. Those burgers look delicious. I can hardly wait until we hook up our bbq. It's a huge stainless steel jobbie and it got blown over backwards into the neighbours yard during a fierce windstorm we had over the xmas holidays. It's a gas bbq, not propane, and the gas line was yanked out of the wall so we need to attach a new one. Lucky for us the gas was turned off at the connection or who knows what might have happened.

TimLaSure In reply to Rebacan [2009-02-12 01:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Yep. The plant was so poorly managed! They literally were told by some clients "name your price, I want a table setting for 200 people" but they were too stupid to hire extra people to keep up. I have a garage full of Candlewick, ever color, every color of beading.

Rebacan In reply to TimLaSure [2009-02-12 01:48:22 +0000 UTC]

Such a shame. I get so mad when all of these old companies move production to China, especially when they have no concept of following rules over there like not poisoning children with lead toys etc. But you're right some companies just ask for it. grrr...

TimLaSure In reply to Rebacan [2009-02-12 01:53:31 +0000 UTC]

Ya...down with China.

It's true though. My son was there a couple of years ago he he said you couldn't see across the street for smog. I read somewhere that they open a new coal fired electrical plant every 2 weeks.

When I first saw the title on this I thought you were referring to the way the duct comes out of the roof and resembles the turned up horn on a viking helmet!! and the fact that the building's as long as one of their ships!

Love the story but I don't think my original impression will ever leave me! Great Photo!

I'll have to look it up. I couldn't get over how coincidental this was because I'm sitting here trying to write a paper on Dale Chihuly. He is a glass artist (although of a different sort) and while I thought he was great I'm sitting here wondering how he can even call himself an artist or sign a piece since he doesn't even do any of the work. It seems that he's done very little in the past 20 years other than run the business end of things and start a publishing company to promote himself but he's still being given credit for the work the factory is producing. It's mind boggling.

This is a pic I took of a burger I made one day lol. [link] That's Viking "Confetti" It's the same pattern Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi had in their home. I bought a service of 12 to use at WVU tailgates because of the blue and gold.

These dishes look really familiar. I don't know if I saw them in my parents house or if it was when I cleaned out my in-laws place. I remember liking the smoothness of the little glass balls.

My question now is...why did you take so many food pictures? They're magazine quality for sure but it's never dawned on me to take pictures of food.

TimLaSure In reply to chalutplease [2009-02-12 03:56:09 +0000 UTC]

There once was a forum where me and my friends posted in. It was mostly really funny stuff and I did a thread called, "Burger Time at Timmy's" where once a week I would post a pic of my burgers. Fans would recommend toppings and I would then feature their burger the next week.

Sounds like fun.

I'm liking this photobucket thing too. Then maybe when I'm undecided about a change to a picture I could get feedback before posting it. Trouble is I'm hardly keeping up with life as it is so I really don't need something else to try and keep up with.

TimLaSure In reply to chalutplease [2009-02-12 04:10:13 +0000 UTC]

Photobucket is just mostly for storage really. The nice thing is it generates 4 codes for every pic, including a direct link and an html code for using the pic in comments like on myspace. I could post pics using the html code in our from for my fans to see.
