I was drawn to this because I am a fan of Edward Hopper. Are you familiar with him? He was an American painter of the 1930s-40s (look for Nighthawks). This photo has a quiet, very horizontal, balanced composition (love the neat rows of cigarette boxes lined up like soldiers). No one is looking at the camera, we just see the square backs of the customers and the clerk looking to the side. It makes the viewer feel far away, closed off. The suitcase emphasizes how temporary the moment is (like life). The strong darks and lights with the gleaming chrome make a rich color scheme. The only glow of warmth comes ironically from the refrigerator. The italicized letters of Pepsi, and the little swoosh of their logo offer only a facsimile of organic life. This place is a respite but no one would call it home. Great shot.
