There is something about this that makes me think that this is not some of your best work. There is a good point in that as well, because you have a lot of great work and I greatly admire it. Still, I can't shake the feeling that I am missing aspects of the scene here. I think it's mostly the angle. I can kind of understand the moment that you took this photo in and the composition is mostly correct, putting the boy on the third with the negative space of the water behind him. That's all good. But I am still missing something, mostly a broader view of where he is and what his situation in. I can see the sunlight on his body (very well exposed, I might add), but I'm not feeling it.

Another thing I generally have against downwards angles is a personal thing, really, but it may be general psychology and it may prevent people from connecting with your subject. You see, if I see a photo of someone at a downward angle, I cannot shake the feeling that I am looking down at them. It's something I learned in my filming classes: if you want to give the impression that someone's big, overbearing and important; shoot them from an upward angle. If you do the opposite, you can make the person look less significant, smaller and more fragile.

good point, though this scene was a definite need to shoot from up down, we were pretty high up the railings with no time to wait or maneuver the rocky edges to get down to meet him.

he kept waving and smiling at every other tourist or person waving a camera back at him.

i daresay i caught him in his most intense and concentrated moment at this point when he looked my way

But i totally agree with the eye-level composition, it's something i'm a stickler for when it comes to personal photos.

No harm breaking away once in a while?

Good capture! Fortunate expression! A little photo-editing would relieve the high contrast.
There's only one view. You could have shot a whole series, maybe with rapid-fire, and maybe including vertical format and some exposure bracketing, although the face and shoulder highlights might have turned to glare with more exposure.
I can understand you were probably limited to that looking-down perspective.
