Here's the Matrix as it would have appeared as a 60's pulp sci-fi novel. I really love the aesthetics and cheesy taglines of those old covers.Related content

Love this. Love it, love it, love it!
With its sharp suited characters and ambiguous aesthetic setting, it's pulp material.

Dude this is just absolute perfection I love the work on the bot!!! And you perfectly captured Smith's face. How did you get the thing to look so battered and scuffed up it's so authentic looking!
God I am trying to think of a way to make a cheesy 60's rendition of the summary of how we live in the matrix they would just handle it so poorly and make it sound so bad haha.

I know what you mean though, to me the Matrix does seem like it would be based on a novel/short story
And if this was actually the case I could very well imagine it as the sort of story to appear inside the mind of Philip K. Dick or some other prolific science fiction writer. Plus the story has all his trademark themes of how he questions humanity leading us to believe if it really is what we say it is.
Also the agents could represent his intense paranoia towards the government and it's shady organisations.
