Description
Last week, over at the RBMC blog [link] instead of drawing our planed weekly topic, we chose to honor the art of legendary concept painter Ralph McQuarrie. So I drew Darth Vader, but instead of using the final film design of Darth, I tried to emulate some of McQuarrie's earlier concept paintings, with more of an elongated mouth area and larger samurai like helmet.Head on over to the RBMC blog to check out all of the other awesome tribute art produced in honor of Ralph McQuarrie.
I haven't drawn Darth Vader in what seem like 10 years, so this was really fun to do.
If you want to see some of my mildly embarrassing process go here [link]

I wish there was a book released on these old concept arts and ideas. And if it is? Please tell me what it is and how I can get it. One thing of the concepts I have wondered is how the idea of Vader's injuries developed. What was the original idea behind why he needed to be in that suit? Did he have less or more cybernetic parts in the original script?

I LOVE the design of this piece. I really see the Ralph McQuarrie influence on this Vader, but I also think there's something of the late great Jack "King" Kirby in here too - I think it's the design on the chest-panel, that seems very "Kirby" to me.
Anyway, terrific rendition: one that Lord Vader would do well to be pleased by!

Very nice ! I love Vader's look, even though it is a bit silly The colors and lines are really great - they seem as if they were made with markers.
