Description
This was a short story Brian Bendis, Chris Bachalo, and I did in last years Daredevil Special. I thought there was some really nice story telling and elegant visuals in this.Related content

I was so impressed with the Smith/Quesada Doctor Strange work in Guardian Devil, that it is great to see a little more of that story. Great work on your part to keep the piece moody while still very smooth. Keep it up Tim. ~BoS

Very nice sequence, Tim. I love the texture of your inks. The crosshatches, stippled lines, white paint lines and all the beautiful touches you put into your inks that make them special. It's just awesome eye candy that's always above and beyond. I love Chris's take on Strange. He'd be a natural for a Strange book.
I feel the exact same way about Williams too. I was a big fan, but when I saw a Williams inked page in person, my admiration took on a whole new level. They're the slickest, most elegant and natural ink lines I've ever seen. Not a bit of hesitation or effort seems present. It's mind boggling.

Thanks! Yeah, Scott has complete and total control over his tools. His work is pure energy. Since I have to really work at it to keep a steady hand, my lines tend to be slower and more methodical. They might be pretty to look at but they lack some of that energy that guys like Scott bring to the table. I hope to get there some day. Scott keeps me hungry. We also share the same birthday which, coincidentally, is the day after tomorrow. Shameless plug

Energy's a good word for it. It's as if he's sketching and the lines are flowing without any effort. That's impression his inks give anyways. He could be agonizing over them for all I know, but it sure looks effortless.

Wow, what issue is this? Tim's my favorite inker and Chris is one of my favorite artists, and Daredevil is my favorite superhero. I need to get this.

I have to admit, I like this even better than the New X-Men pages you posted. I understand your love of Scott Williams and maybe it's because the most we se of his work is inking Jim Lee and seeing the colored pages. Maybe if we saw more of his work in black and white and inking other people we may see what you see. Until then your still tops in my book. What do you think of Michael Golden when He inks himself? 5th to the First. I'd love to see what your inks would look like over vintage M. Golden. Wouldn't that be a kick.

Seeing Scott's work in black and white is almost a religious experience...at least for me. I have seen Scott ink as wide an array of pencilers as can be ranging in styles from one end of the spectrum to the other. I have yet to see one single weak point to his work. He can do it all and he can usually do it better. Hes our Michael Jordan.
Golden is amazing. His inks are just gorgeous. Ive owned a few of his nicer originals so Ive been able to examine it up close. I think inking some vintage Golden would be a blast. Maybe when Im retired and have time to work for fun.

I'msure your very busy now but I hope I'm around to see you ink a Golden piece.
If you could get Scott to let you post atleast one black and white print of his then maybe we all can see what you see.

Lol, I appreciate the sentiment but, believe me, there are more than a few guys out there who blow me out of the water. This isnt false modesty, its a fact. Scott Williams is the king of all time in my book.

Wow these pages really shine in B&W. I wish more inkers understood lineweights at least half as well as you. Seems like only a handful of inkers know how to do it and you are the only one that I've worked with on a book. Too many "creators" now are worried about style and production. They end up neglecting the craft on all aspects of comic art. I think inking has taken the biggest blow from this in recent years.

TimTownsend In reply to BrianReber [2008-01-16 21:12:00 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the kind words, buddy. And I couldnt agree more. Inking really has taken a hit. The main reason is simply that the vast majority of fans and even many pros' dont truly understand what inking is. Many just look at it as a formality or an unecessary frivolity as opposed to an important and, in more cases than not, necessary step in the comic art process. Too much ego, too much greed. Dont get me started.

I always admired that crosshatch (cross hatching pattern on page near near the lamp), as far as I remember you were the inventor of it, I used to think you used some kind of zip a tone effect ; )
And yeah very fluid and elegant story-telling by Bachalo.
