I hate Ikeno but the pic IS called SF4. So a job well done. Anyway, it only seems Ikenoey because he's responsible of most of the SF4 art that was made for the game. He's all beefed out in the neck and head, just like in this game. It's not necessarily Ikeno styled.
How bout a more grown up version of Alpha Ryu like in EX or a timeless, definitive Ryu, Tincan style of course.
And I'm Always eager to see an Akuma from you! That's almost the sole reason I started following you. In my opinion, the best people at drawing Akuma are you and Chamba, maybe Alvin Lee too. You and chamba are tied in my mind, but you're inching forward because I can pick your brain through your drawings.
By the way, I should have said at first, I love it! Does exactly what it says on the tin.

Ooh, Harsh. Are you him?!!
I suppose I dont HATE him. That's a little strong. I just hate that he's all we have left, except for the occasional Kinu stuff. I just miss Bengus is all. Don't hate me, I'm actually a bit of a fan of yours and, judging by the look of your ID, you owe part of your style to the crouching middle kick too!
Please allow me to have an opinion. I do enjoy a lot of Ikeno's art but a lot of it I really dont like. When he misses, he really misses.

you said "When he misses, he really misses" are you referring to the sf4 art style?

Not just that but yeah, SF4 in particular. We were given an art gallery, similar to the MVC2 gallery, which I thought was gonna be really cool, and some of it was but it probsbly went a bit too far into Ikeno's process. The best Ikeno drawings in it, and in the shitload of streetfighter books I have(Not as much as you, admittedly)are ones where he's copying existing styles like Bengus' or Akiman's. The bare looking sketches were pretty bad when you looked through his rough lines to the bare essence of what he believes each character to be at their core. I don't know how to properly put this, but I think he draws facial expressions like that of fish. Their lips are weird, maybe that's just me. I resent what he did with Gen, making him into Pai Mei. I don't like his Akuma. I really liked his interpretation of him in Third Strike but that's before he established that look permanently as the way he would look in future. Now Akuma doesn't really look much like he "should", in my opinion, with his weird beady eyes and lumpy chin. Some kind of Imposter Gouken has made his way into the game, not that he's completely unwelcome(I actually like his playstyle alot), but if the original design wasn't broken why fix it? Lastly, I don't really like the proportions of the fighters in SF4, they look swolen(not that I don't like beef, but they were too rounded for me). Sagat should have looked similar to his alpha incarnation, that silhouette is unbeatable. Same for Zangeif. He practically can't draw 'Geif, he always has this dumb, vacant look and I hate how he does that malnourished Blanka!
All that said, I think he makes decent art. I liked a lot of what he did for EX but would prefer Edayan(more of a pupil than copycat)and I think he's an absolutely amazing colourist but when I think of all of the people who could be doing SF4 art, like the Capcom legends, I get angry that he's all I have left. I have been a life long SF fan and I love the game and it's inconsistent universe more than is sensible for a guy at 26(I've got a Bengus Ryu tattoo covering my entire left breast). When I heard there was going to be a SF4 I nearly shit myself but I was very dissapointed with it when it came. The art of Street Fighter, the old art anyay, was, in my opinion, had the best art of any game series. I don't believe that anymore with just Ikeno left from that old crew. Perhaps they should hire new blood for all in-game graphics like you, tincan and some heads from Udon. You guys seem to stick to clearly defined parameters for how to draw these characters.
Well that's that rant over. I wouldn't blame you for not reading it all. I guess, at the core of it, I'm just bitter that all the Capcom design staff I gave a shit about are gone and, in my opinion, Ikeno can't fill their shoes.

Well, if it's any consolation, I read your rant. And I just about completely agree with your assessment of the art of Street Fighter 4. I have just about all the Street Fighter/Capcom fighting game art on my PC and I have to say that the Street Fighter 4 art is my least favourite. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the informative mini essay here. Before I read this, I had always appreciated Street Fighter art and collected plenty of it for reference and such, but I'd never known the names of the in-house artists. So thanks for that, even though it's kind of unnerving to find out that Ikeno is the same artist who did the Street Fighter 3 art (possibly my favourite)!

Thanks. That was a long time ago that I went on that rant but it's still nice to think I'm not just being crazy. Ikeno did the art for 3rd strike. The new generation and 2nd impact were done by Akiman and Kinu Nishimura, as far as I know(ooh, and I recently discovered that Bengus did some work on 2nd impact). I liked the art in 3rd strike, it's nowhere near my favourite, but I think Ikeno might have become a bit complacent with all the rest gone. I think it's enough for most people that one of the original artists but not for me. I'd rather they just started fresh.

Yeah, to be honest, I've seen plenty of better Street Fighter art here and around the internet. They definitely need some new blood in-house. Still, if he does the character designs, he should stick around. Juri and Crimson Viper are pretty well designed. Abel's all right, I guess.
Do you know who did the artwork for SvC Chaos and the Online edition of SF III? I've been in love eith the the Chaos art forEVER and I recently checked out the new SF III. It's technically very impressive, but I still don't think they got the characters quite "right", y'know?

Apparently the SvC Chaos art was a SNK artist called Nona. I've never really been a SNK fan so I don't really know their artists. Stanley Lau or Artgerm did the new SFIII online edition stuff and he's on deviantart.
I liked the new art a lot. It looks very sexy on a big screen tv but I don't know why these games need new art at all. A big part of the draw, for me, in buying these re-released games is to see the old art. The gallery in that game has some really cool art, bit of a pitty my favourite pick is sideways though. Same with MvC 2. I think Joe Vriens did a really great job with the new art but, again, I only bought the game for the cool Bengus artwork. That game used to have an excellent gallery but I think the Xbox version has none. Rip off!
I'm not a huge fan of C.Viper. To me she looks to be lifted straight out of KOF(I've already mentioned I'm not their biggest fan, even though I know the some folks who created SFII helped create their games.). It looks like fighters in KOF worry too much about their appearance and C.Viper, in my opinion, was made to be cool looking first and a fighter second. That being said, I'd take her over Abel, El Fuerte, Rufus(Don't even get me started on how much I hate his design!)or Hakan(Darun Mister rip off!)any day of the week.
I think Juri's design is solid in the SF universe. She's credible looking as a fighter first and has a bit of a cool edge but it's secondary to her fighting ability.
You should check this guy's blogs out. He has some really interesting facts about the design and creation of SF characters and other fighting games. This man's done his homework.
