Description A.  Title and Playwright: South Deep to Blood Alley, Stephanie Jalland
B.  Production Type: Professional production in collaboration with courses from The Arts University in Bournemouth.
B.  Medium:  Textured recycled paper, black marker pen, water colours, collage: torn out paper and glue, pastel crayons, gold ink pen.
C.  Artwork time: Approx 5 hours
D.  Construction time: 1,5-2 months. 2 people worked on the costume.
E.  What parts of the costume are recycled from other costumes? The fabric rosettes (making up the peacocks "plumage" was partly made from scraps of fabric from old costumes and fabric left-overs.
F.  What odd terrible awful nasty challenges did you have to overcome to make this costume as good as it was? Had to rethink and resize the size of the plumage, as the original idea was that the actor was going to be able to open and then fold the plumage. Took much work to figure out how to make the harness and what materials to use to make it as lightweight as possible, as the actors also had to carry the plumage by themselves to the location and put it on themselves.
G. What is the BEST thing about the costume rendering or final real costume? How the "feathers" moved in the wind and breeze as this was an outdoor performance.
H. Most important!  How much of the costume had to change from the rendering (the dream) to get into reality? The size of the plumage, how the plumage (harness) worked, the number of the peacock "eyes".

Wow, what a challenge! These sort of projects are all about balance and weight, and it looks like you nailed it. All of your elements are in place and finished. You should be very proud!

Goodness, that's ambitious!  (terrific use of upcycled material, btw)

It's always tricky when an actor has to wear something bulky on their back (can you imagine how much engineering it took to get this to work? img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20… )

Very imaginative solution to a very unique challenge.  Nicely done. (I think the colors in your final product work fine, but if you still have access to the costume, I'd try and get a shot with softer lighting- this one is a little sunwashed and doesn't do your creation justice. )

Om my thank you!

Yes true! Did you design that costume which was linked? Was only a small thumbnail but looked amazing and complicated.

I had some great makers making this costume though, I only did the mask and headpiece. Very true that the sun makes the costume look faded in this pic. Had a look at your work, and wow is all I can say

The link is Tatiana Noginova's design for The Little Mermaid on Broadway.  Check out Ursula's tentacles- it's really something.

A challenge for sure.  The only thing I would have liked to have seen in the actual final product was more of the colors that you had in your sketch.  The vivid blue and gold is what makes the concept so spectacular, however the lighter greens and purple sort of makes the sketch get lost in the actual product.  But it is still a artistically great piece in the end.

Thank you! yes I do agree there's a big gap between the colour scheme in the sketch and in the final costume. That's great feedback, thanks so much for pointing that out
