The Terminator-class Star Destroyer was developed as a modern iteration of the Tector-class Star Destroyer for the Imperial Navy in 9 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). Since the Terminator-class design was designed off the keel of the Imperial II-Class Star Destroyer (to ease manufacture) the Terminator-class was placed squarely into the Imperial Star Destroyer family along side the Tector-class, and Interdictor-class.
When compared to the Tector-class, the two ships shared many similarities, both lacked a main hanger, both were better armored than the standard ISD, and both where intended purely for ship to ship combat. However, while the Tector-class shared the same superstructure as the Imperial-class (though lightly modified), the Terminator-class had a completely new superstructure. This new superstructure hid a larger reactor, with many of the crew being moved from the hull into the superstructure to make room for the larger reactor and other space consuming hardware. In the end, it was all for nothing.
While the Terminator-class boasted a stronger offensive capability to both the Imperial-class, and Tector-class, the versatility of the Imperial-class kept it from going mainstream. And though it was indeed better than the Tector-class, it wasn't better enough. Retrofitted Tector-clas, called "Tector II-Class" essentially made the two ships equals, and thus the need for the Terminator-class was gone.
That being said, the few that were built went on to go and fight in the Galactic Civil War against the Rebel Alliance. One notable ship, the "ISD: Tormentor" managed to hold out well past the battle of Endor, and even the Battle of Jakku. In those years she want from a professionally run warship to a pirate ship, raiding New Republic and other outer rim trade routes. This came to an end in 21 ABY when the ship attempted to attack a seemingly isolated Nomadic Imperial cruiser. The "ISD: Tormentor" was soon surrounded by numerous Nomadic Imperial Warships with the SD-Vanguard , and the SD-Guardian leading this rescue mission. The "ISD: Tormentor" wasn't destroyed but capture, her crew were either handed over to the New Republic (for the right price), where given a place in the Nomadic Fleet (if they had the right skills) or where sold into slavery. The "ISD: Tormentor" herself was later scrapped, and her parts used to repair and build other Nomadic Imperial ships.
