Description

GIMP 2.

I'm back up and painting again. Here's a preview of what is to come. To everybody who's been waiting, thank you for your patience.

This is going someplace I have not often gone before, so brutal critique on landscapes and clouds is warmly welcome.

Thank you. The finished piece is coming - just everything has been turned upside down recently. Stay tuned!

Thank you <3 My schedule has been pretty upset recently, but hopefully going to launch the first part (of twenty-two) of this project soon.

I like how you used different gradients in colors to show distance and perspective in the picture!

It makes me think of Mars as a first impression. The light dusty haze over the landscape and lower horizon is typically of what I've seen in places like Afghanistan and New Mexico. The stark contrast between the land and the deep blue of the exposed empty sky also reminds me of that vast unprotected feeling bare landscapes give me. There is often a feeling of being open to the void of space from a place that only offers one emptiness for another. Additional details in the very foremost part of the ground would add to the picture by giving it more depth although it creates that pretty well already.

The greenish blotches over that one whispers of cloud looks a bit off somehow. I've seen similar or felt and smelled it over open tropical ocean. Like the air had taken on some of the ocean's stagnation. Seems different from the otherwise dry dusty and empty feel the rest of the picture carries.Β

I'm interested to see what this is a part of.Β

I like what I hear - Mars is a good impression. Considered including some daytime stars to emphasize this is not set on Earth, but not certain it would work with the weather. Want to keep a lot of clouds to maintain an ascending sense of perspective, so even though those are very low and fluffy clouds and there isn't a lot of haze looking straight up, daytime stars might clash with expectations. Most of this is imaginary: Took inspiration from Gurney and Derib from memory, but I have never actually seen badlands with my own eyes. From Sweden, the closest true desolation I can think of is in either Poland or Slovakia - cannot remember where exactly.
More emphasis on the foreground is a good idea. The finished scene will be a character coming over the crest of a hill, so there will be a lot more detail in the lower half.

Indeed, the green do look very off, and couldn't quite put my finger on it for a while. Turned out it was a technical error on my part - set a blending mode incorrectly after adding lemon yellow gradients.
Heard green and purple clouds are relatively commonplace around Singapore and Malta, neither of which are exactly deserts.

Unfortunately I cannot give that much critique since my own background skills are pretty meh.

The only thing i can really say is maybe make the horizon more distinct, i think the land and the sky blends too much.

Aye, there definitely needs to be a sharper transition. Tried going with haze to indicate that the actual horizon is behind the hills, but haze doesn't really work in this environment.

Thank you. The finished piece will focus on a relatively drab character, so using a colourful background for contrast. A bit tricky with diffusion and all.

Looks quite good to me.Β  The only thing I might suggest would be perhaps to make the landforms a bit sharper-edged, so as to make the distinction between land and sky more pronounced.Β  But that is mostly a personal-taste issue.Β  I don't think there's anything off here.Β  It's a really nice landscape!

Tinselfire In reply to Andibi [2020-03-20 13:40:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. And indeed, there definitely needs to be a crisper transition. Went with a hazy look to indicate the horizon is hidden behind the hills, but on second thought this is perhaps a bit too arid an environment for haze. Haven't used an specific reference, but had the Dakota badlands in mind.

I'm no expert, but I think it could go either way -- A dust storm would cause such haze, I believe.Β  Mostly I was just inserting my own taste...

The dusty horizon looks so well. I mean the powder/dust fog. ^.^ But not just the horizon, the whole picture very pleasant to the eye and looks believable/likely. You plays with the colors nicely.

Hm. I see a pretty fast Platypus with spiked armor. O_o Do you see it too? If you see something in the clouds, that's a good sign. I think that means it's artistic and realistic at the same time.

Sorry if it was too hard.

Hmm. I think i understand the "turned the other way ".

Uhm. If i looking at the landscape too much, then the one of hmm...Β  Not mistake, and not bad.... but the green clouds interesting in this style. I mean... Maybe too sharp between the blurred clouds. Or maybe the focus. Not clear, where those clouds, behind the white clouds, or in front of the white clouds. Β

Hmm.Β  Nonetheless, fit very well the color composition, and i like it. But if we check the whole artwork and style (in original size), it is interesting between the shapes. In small size perfect. ^.^
Sorry, i onlyΒ  now noticed this.

An excellent track for cruising across this manner of landscape - in another time, another land, in a chrome hover-convertible with a stereo that will always accept CDs.

It sounds like the track which might have resulted had Nadja said "let us be optimistic without ceasing to be beautiful", then first gone to Millencolin then Oasis for advice.

Without revealing too much ahead, this is part of an effort to unify some concepts from the past four years into a more or less coherent setting - if it so takes a story spanning 3400 years.
