Description
A small design by Maria Diaz from the design library in World of Cross Stitching 162. Still not sure on the colours used in this, not sure why though. Have been trying to see if the pattern can be extended to make it longer so could be used for other things like bookmarks......still working it out.Stitched on a scrap bit of fabric from local furnishing fabric shop with DMC threads

Thanks, not happy with the colours........they're more medieval than Celtic so will be redoing this in true Celtic colours at some point π

Not happy with these colours (these are more medieval than Celtic) so am looking through the The Book of Kells & Lindisfarne Gospels at the colour combinations.......watch this space π

The downside of being Welsh, Irish and Scottish (as well as English).......I can get very picky if a Celtic design doesn't look right for whatever reason lol π

Oeh cool piece Love how shiny the floss looks in this piece.Β
Maybe you are not sure about the colours because the green looks a much more pale colour as the others? The yellow, red and black have much more contrast with each other. Just a thought though, it's a lovely piece no matter what .

Think the problem is that I don't associate these colours as Celtic, to me they're more medieval colours......if you look at The Book of Kells and the Lindisfarne Gospels you'll see what I mean

ah yes I see what you're getting at. Not that I want to add to your list of stuff to stitch, but maybe you should do another one with celtic colours XD

I've gotten to know cross stitcher and their aptitude to find more projects to engage in Looking forward to those pieces! Both books are so gorgeous and probably will use them as inspiration for a project as well at some time in the future.

I seriously miss Cross Stitch Collection for projects βΉοΈ, only have Cross Stitch Gold and The World of Cross Stitching now.
Am wanting to convert all the artwork including the Illuminated letters from both books into cross stitch π. Definately need a high Res copy of them at that point, only way to get all the detail clearly

I think I bought some kind of aida with a preprinted pattern at a second hand store a few weeks ago! Not totally sure thoug, and I am afraid won't be able to look for a few months . But maybe this knowledge will assure you there might be related cross stitch projects around somewhere to help you get started? It is gorgeous artwork so worth the effort of converting anyhow. Would be interested in stitching and helping myself! Just give a shout when you need help.Β

Will do π.......oooohhhhhhhh nnnnnnoooooo I'll be taking the stitching straight from the books. Hence why I need high Res copies of them, they'll be going through the computer programme to chart them and the colours will be what was used by the artists themselves back when the books were created. Not what people think they should use nowadays which I love but I want to go back to the basics of the creators and give them the credit π

The Book of Kells is in museum in Dublin and The Lindisfarne Gospels are in the British Library, so think it could be a case of asking them for high Res copies, the copy you see on the internet is fairly lousy for fine detail especially on the carpet pages.
This link is for a manuscript called the Gorleston Psalter which was housed at Norwich Cathedral when it was the monastry π, fairly crap Res but it gives you some idea of how amazing the medieval manuscripts are.......this is on my to get high Res list and convert lol

If you ask for a high he's copy they can provide one (so says British Library digital collection), can't see why they just don't do that in the first place π. Have seen a high Res copy of an old illuminated manuscripts and π€that would be detailed enough on the carpet pages.....won't know til I actual try working on one for definate
I only found out about this manuscript from Goodrun the librarian here at Norwich Cathedral when we were talking about Cromwell and what he did to the old illuminated manuscripts in the Reformation. Out of the whole library's illuminated manuscripts about 100 or just over still survive, more by luck than anything.......I know Norwich Cathedral monastry manuscripts have ended up at the British Library, Westminster Abbey Library, Cambridge University Library and one of the museums in America somewhere

With Goodrun's help at the Cathedral library I've gone through lord knows how many ring binders/leaver arch files with thumbnails of all the roof bosses in the Cathedral with description (over 1000 roof bosses in total), gone through a book that lists all the Norwich Cathedral monastery medieval manuscripts at Cambridge University Library (did forget to write down each manuscripts reference so will need to get those before talking to Cambridge University Library), looked at a few reference books on the roof bosses.........that's before I even start looking at all the books with printed illuminated artwork (according to Goodrun there's a lot in the library). Next stage is to get more of an idea of which manuscripts from Norwich Cathedral monastery are at British Library as trying to find that info out on the British Librarys website is HELL, last stage which is likely to be the toughest is Westminster Abbey Library as there is just nothing of much help on the website.
What would also be seriously beneficial is finding out what manuscripts if any each library has from all the other Monasteries the city had, I know there's two copies of Mother Julian's manuscripts with one at British Library and the other one is at one of the other two libraries (can't remember which one tho)........but there's also the White Friars monastery, the Black Friars monastery and Carrow Abbey in the city. No one seems to have much of any idea of what happened to their libraries when Henry VIII closed those Monasteries down π€

That does sound like an awfull lot of work! I am in awe of your determination though! Are those libraries very helpful when you contact them directly? The project could be a great way to support and advocate their own work as well.Β
Sometimes the thing with historical research online is that there's not much digital informaiton because somehow the persons into old stuff are not good at digitizing and the new stuf so there are not much online archives and the one in existence are not very well-organized . Do you find that's a challenge as well?
Anyhow again, let me know if you want any help with the designing itself because I love that part
