Description
Here's the Tengu, big nose and all. I did this for my girlfriend's parents in Japan. Gotta love the eastern representation of the westerners. Pastel, a couple hours, no ref. Daisuke Nobu!Related content

Did you since heard any conformation on her dad's theory?
I've featured this work here .

Very nice. I like the vibes I get off of this picture. He looks like an old mountain hermit/monk. He appears wise, calm, yet amazingly powerful.
The very look in his eye is approachable yet stern. Honestly, he reminds me of my old martial arts teacher. xD

delightful colors, and his muscle structure lends an impression of strength despite his long, white beard and hair. Together with the sparse, wiry body hair, there is an impression of an ascetic warrior; although the beaded lock of hair suggests some pride, likely a just confidence in his own abilities.

So wait, is that you representing the west to the east or that the tengu is a representation of the west done up by the east?
I think someone else got confuzzled by it.
But enough about that. Kickbutt muscaculture. Especially like the neck/shoulders. The beard is also quite well done.

I guess it's my style of their representation of the west. eh, according to my girlfriend's dad who is japanese, the tengu represents westerners because of the huge noses, don't know how the other blue bird like tengu represents us, but i should ask him. Things to ponder.

i've done quite a lot of reading on tengu and other japanese creatures of myth and folklore, and i can honestly say that this is the only place i've ever seen mention of such an association. Typically, oni are mentioned as being representative of foreigners, although this is by no means a popular theory. As for tengu, they are most frequently believed to have grown from the association of crow-like forest spirits and secretive, mountain-dwelling monastic orders. As i've said, mentions of their appearances being representative of westerners is a rare enough idea that you're the first person i've seen putting it forward.

i honestly didn't come up with the idea, my girlfriends dad told me about it when i was visiting her in japan. He speaks some broken english, so i may have misunderstood, but i figure, anybody who would know would be japanese themselves.

Well... the colours mean fairly specific things, right? That probably has something to do with it.
