FOR TODAY'S SAFARI...welcome to the Colony Kingdom! Property of That, and a lot of this was inspired by "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" which, after reading the Kingdom's summary, truly does have a lot in common! I.e. a forest teeming with giant arthropods and bizarre flora and fungi. In the case of the Colony Kingdom, where there was once a Kingdom abundant with life and people, and a Sea Serpent-caused disaster that wiped out said life...living things eventually returned to the Kingdom. But completely different from what it had been before. That is the VERY laconic version of what happened. But nowadays, it sees itself ruled by giant insects. Particularly the Myrmidon, a race of vespids (i.e. ants, bees, and wasps) who have made city-sized hives, and crafted a civilization worthy of the legacy of those who came before them.
Them, and the new chitin-plated creatures that came to inhabit this vast new island, to enjoy its splendor.
----------------------------------------------------
a) Great Fangsnide. The largest terrestrial carnivore the island has to offer, this towering sea spider relative's "jaws" are specially designed to force apart the exoskeletons of huge insects, and pierce the exposed flesh. A smaller relative lives in the Shadow Kingdom.
b) Rufous Wingworm. They are prolific herbivores and fungivores that graze on the forest floor. They are a choice prey item for several carnivores, so they travel in swarms for safety, and keep their young grubs on their body until they mature.
c) King's Cordyceps. A kind of Cordyceps fungi specially equipped to prey on the Ohmu. More specifically, embed themselves in their skin, which the Ohmu sheds before it infects the rest of their body. This is more than sufficient enough for these fungi.
d) Tessen Treeflower. One of many kinds of treeflower that inhabit this forest. There are no real trees here, as they are all replaced by tree-sized flowers, that can proliferate very quickly thanks to the large amount of potential pollinators.
e) Wyvernfly. A predatory dragonfly relative that hunts using two extended front limbs, and four extra "wings" derived from their back legs. They specialize in small, fast, airborne prey.
f) Earthwool. A type of fungus that often grows so thickly, it bursts out of the ground, creating a thick blanket of hair-like mycelium that stretches forward until it's blocked off, causing it to collect into a massive ball. They have comparatively small fruiting bodies that resembles a sundew.
g) Weevil's Wine. A sweet, ground-growing fruit that opens up when ripe. This is to allow herbivores like mammoth weevils to drink its juice, and distribute the seeds it consumes into new areas.
h) Mammoth Weevil. A large herbivorous insect related to weevils, that prefers to eat fruit and nectar. They are very social creatures, and always look after their grubs, teaching them what's safe to eat.
i) Tendrilion Flower. A dandelion relative that reproduces like any other dandelion. However, they almost always grow nearby a Holstein's Paintball, as the fungus' slime helps seeds temporarily adhere to it, assisting in transporting them to new areas to grow.
j) Holstein's Paintball. A black-and-white fungus whose fruiting body is deceptively soft. When touched, it releases a multi-colored slime resembling spilled paint. It's filled with spores, as it spreads with the help of insects who accidentally step on it.
k) Rosaceous Stalag Mite. An insect related to treehoppers that is well-defended, but slow. So it often hitches rides on much larger insects, their presence helping deter predators in turn.
l) Fluffy Unicorn Ant. A trap-jawed ant with a horn on its head that helps grow fungus, in order to provide food for its favorite prey items. Mostly mid-sized herbivores, like Wingworms. The abundance of hair on their bodies helps fungus spores and seeds stick onto it.
m) Royal Yanma. A carrion-eating flier that has strong jaws to help it pierce apart hard exoskeletons. They also very frequently visit carrion flowers, and help pollinate them.
n) Titan Arum. Also known as the "Corpse Flower", it's pungent odor imitates that of rotting flesh, and is highly attractive to many of the Colony Kingdom's carnivores. As a result, this flower is extremely common here.
o) Rafflesia. Another common "carrion flower" that enlists the help of carrion lovers to pollinate. However, it is also a parasite, attaching itself to hosts high up on the flower canopies with the help of flying insects.
p) Ohmu. The largest animal on the Kingdom, bar none. It is a peaceable herbivore, yet they are very rarely seen. Because of their rarity, many legends surround them, as some people believe them to be sapient, perhaps even guardians of the forest.
q) Lesser Webbird. A type of jumping spider that uses web to make itself a "kite" with which to fly with. It can jump great distances, and glide in order to escape predators that hunt it. They are herbivorous, feeding on the sap of treeflowers.
r) Hebikera. These titanic flying arthropods are seemingly related to centipedes, albeit they can fly with their flat body and four wings. They are herbivorous, grazing on the canopy's vegetation, but they are highly territorial, and will eat meat at times.
