Description EDIT:

It has been brought to my attention (repeatedly) that Alfred Nobel invented dynamite for miners and NOT for war and was so horrified by its extensive use in war that it inspired him to create the Nobel Peace Prize. His own way of making up for what he saw as an evil that he brought into the world.
I will be editting this fact properly when the project is over in May, in the mean time, stop telling me something I now know! Thanks.

Nice typography, but that's actually a rather unfair message to spread around! ):

As other commenters have said, he founded the Nobel prizes to make up for what he'd unintentionally caused. He wasn't a hypocrite of any sort, so it's not fair to incriminate him.

If you have high visibility on dA, and can get messages across to lots of people, it's not very kind to use that to defame others, even if they're dead.

I appreciate your comment, but I don't understand why it's an unfair message? He invented dynamite and gave his name to the Nobel Peace Prize... That's all the fact says, I haven't called him a hyprocrite.
I didn't have high visibility on dA until yesterday when someone put this up for a DD... It's not my fault how people interpret it.
I didn't realise this particular fact would offend so many people and I will be re-wording it when the project is over in May when I edit all other facts, and I'll make sure I include more detail about his life and the reason he invented dynamite.

Rosamelettes In reply to tistwas [2010-02-22 17:46:16 +0000 UTC]

It's little unfair because, while everything the piece says is true, it's not the whole truth.

You see, The two facts presented by the piece are not stand-alone or disjointed like if you'd said "Thomas Edison the inventor of the camera had brown hair."

Whether it was your intention or not, the piece implies a contrast between the fact that he established the peace prize and the fact that he made dynamite (which blows things up- an antithesis of peaceful), and creates an effect of "oh the irony."

Namely, "It's so ironic that the founder of the peace prizes also made it possible to blow things up! That's hilarious. I'm not taking those prizes seriously anymore." (and, sadly, a few commenters have said things to that effect.)

That's not the explicit message, yes, but as a typography artist you know that the implicit statements are as important as what's said outright in words.

And, that message isn't quite fair if you consider the rest of the story: you know, that he felt bad and wanted to redeem himself and all of that. It's not an irony at all.

But wow, I'm sorry for the long comment and really, don't sweat it. :') It's not terrible or offensive, It's just not cool that the masses would know those two things about him and think "lol irony" without knowing the third thing and thus get the whole story.

All of that aside, though, lovely typography for sure. The background texture and the color scheme are super neat.

Defame: to attack the good name or reputation of, as by uttering or publishing maliciously or falsely anything injurious; slanderor libel; calumniate

This isn't defaming him in any way shape or form. It's presenting a known fact. He created the Peace Prize to make up for the destruction that people used his invention for. Besides, dynamite isn't all bad. It is used (peacefully) in construction. Even art: the US wouldn't have Mt. Rushmore without it!

Love this deviation, the fonts and background work well together. Great presentation.

Great work! I love the vignette element and the arrangement of type is very interesting. A small critique though, I think some may see this as critical of the man. Was this your intent? I think he had invented it for work in his construction and for blasting rock, and his endowment he left after he died and the subsequent peace prize help people who attempt to do work to help others. I am not an authority on his life, or trying to degrade this awesome piece, just curious of your concept

It was no where near my intent. I found it interesting, hence why I made it a fact in my project. I admit I took the fact for face value and I should've researched it more. I'll be editting a few facts when I finish the project in May and I'll make sure to find out more about him then and make the fact seem less critical.
Thank you for the lovely comment and putting your point across in a polite way!! I really appreciate it.

there's no irony... he invented dynamite to help MINERS. Then it gotten used against his wishes as a tool of war... Then with the money he got from selling dynamite the Nobel foundation was started (I don't know if it was after or before his death but I do know that this award was something he wanted).

Are you trying to be ironic/satirical?

The dynamite was invented before he established the prize.

He invented the dynamite for the purposes of construction. He did not foresaw the terrible use of his invention in wars. Hence the establishment of an array of prizes like the peace prize. Kind of an act of self-redemption.

This piece of deviation promotes an idea that is historically inaccurate. I wouldn't be surprised if the creator claimed that Mugabe won recent elections without dispute in other deviations.

by the way, i hope you don't drive anywhere... or use a train... or live in a house... or work on an oil rig. Next time, before trying to sound smart and witty by pointing out things that are common knowledge, try looking into it a little more. Find out the reason why the Nobel Peace Prize exists, then try rethinking your little deviation.

As I am so fond of saying, a little bit of information is dangerous. People are idiots...

Now kindly fuck off around the corner.

I don't understand how what you said was amusing in any way. It's just a picture. Not anything serious, so don't be an ass about it.

I think you should take that last piece of your own advice for yourself.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

xmornolthax In reply to HarleyAnonymous [2010-02-22 17:14:38 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, you're quite right of course, it is not a serious matter, but that's the fun of it really. Besides, if I'm not an ass, how will people learn?

But all joking aside (or at least half-so) It's quite justified. Yes, I could perhaps have been a bit nicer about it, but then the point would have been ignored and then I might as well have said nothing. Did you find the image ironic? funny? Moreover, did you know that, yes indeed, Nobel invented dynamite? Regardless of your answer, try thinking beyond the fact that it may be just an image, but an image on the internet is classed as "mass media" and therefore can have a far greater impact than you seem to have considered. Not that I assume this image will go any farther in importance than DA, but none-the-less it will have impacted some few and some will actually believe that Nobel was indeed "The Merchant of Death" as many have dubbed him.

The Principle of the matter is simple; people need to think a bit more about what they create before posting something that comes off as condemnatory or incipiently accusatory, and do a bit more research. This is the very basic grounds of propaganda. Otherwise, they not only make themselves look like idiots, but to the same effect, everyone who believes them.

Go look through some of the images of the Jewish, or anyone of African decent (an many others)from Nazi Germany from about 1938. Images that were used to insight a nations peoples. Do it and think about what they caused, then come back and tell me that ANY image is JUST an image. Truthfully I hate using that example because it is so cliched, and I am not Jewish or Black, but it is still apt. No I do not accuse this person of creating something that is on par with those images, but again, the principle of the matter is the same. People like this are why North Americans call any middle-eastern person "Paki" or "Terrorist". because they can't be bothered to delve a little deeper and learn more for themselves.

As I previously stated; "a little bit of knowledge is dangerous"

yes, that's true, but the way you present it shows it in the wrong light!
Maybe you could add in your comment that he wanted to help the miners, saw how terribly this could be used as a weapon and therefore put all the money he earned with dynamite into the Peace Nobel Prize?
He was a good and peaceloving man.

Nevertheless I like the way it looks like although I dislike the way the man's pictured.
