Description EDIT:

It has been brought to my attention (repeatedly) that Alfred Nobel invented dynamite for miners and NOT for war and was so horrified by its extensive use in war that it inspired him to create the Nobel Peace Prize. His own way of making up for what he saw as an evil that he brought into the world.
I will be editting this fact properly when the project is over in May, in the mean time, stop telling me something I now know! Thanks.

thats not irony, thats stupidity.
He invented it to help the miners, to make it less dangerous. he never wanted to build a new weapon, but as we all know humans...they allways want to kill each other.
and so you learn something new everyday...but probably its wrong.

It's not wrong, he did invent dynamite and gave his name to the Nobel Peace Prize. However, I didn't research this fact enough and took it for face value. I will be editting it at the end of the project in May, in the mean time I've changed my artist's comments to make sure people know why he created the Nobel Peace Prize etc.
Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, and to build the railroads from coast to coast. Anywhere cutting through a lot of earth and rock was necessary.

Originally dynamite was presented as "Nobel's Blasting Powder" it was the first stuff with more power than standard black powder, and his original formulation has been replaced with safer less unstable alternatives in recent years.

Like the men who split the atom, they aren't responsible for what others do with their discovery -- especially when they were looking to HELP solve a problem.

Even making munitions is *NOT* making war, or hurting, since freedom is WON, and needs to be held, and that takes guns, and bombs, unfortunately. Not all war is about initiating aggression. Much is about _stopping_ it.

Legend has it that a premature obituary calling him "The Merchant of Death" made him think about the legacy he was leaving and set up the Nobel Prize.

Anyway, you can "spin" things like this anyway you want, especially by leaving out the details and removing the context.

Didn't he start up the fund for the peace prize because he was horrified at all the nonconstructive uses to which dynamite was being put?

everything can be used two ways: for progress or for destruction. knowhledge is power and it depends on how you use it

Nobel set up the Peace Prize after he realized that the tool he created was being used for destruction and not the progress that he originally intended it for.

It was kinda his way of trying to right a wrong that he created.

ah, i forgot that story. and i don't think he did anything wrong, that invention can help people in certain activities. but as i said, unfortunately humans more often use potentially useful stuff for destruction. can't get it, eh

Yea.. I know that.
It's the reason why i never took it that seriously through my entire life.
But when Obama won that peace prize.. I lost all respect for nobel all together. It could die for all i care.
And this is coming from a Swede.

Vixiana In reply to Q9R42 [2010-02-20 17:45:40 +0000 UTC]

But you also have to remember that Nobel didn't MEAN for it to be used in war: he just meant for it to be used in mining so that it could SAVE lives (dynamite has a more controlled blast then what they used before)

After Nobel realized its use in war, he was so torn up by what he had created, he then created the Nobel Peace Prize.

I dunno, to me, learning that made me gain a little respect for it. And it also made me realize that some humans are just silly and violent. XD

I've never heard of anything so undeserving before.

I agree with you, this coming from an American stand point.

One of my friends pointedly said the only reason he got it is because he replaced Bush. XD

Yea.. Not that Obama is my problem or anything.
But bush and Obama has so far.. Well.. They've been pretty similar. Obama just took over what bush had started.

I can't for the life of me understand why everyone from various places on earth has to go to Afghanistan and all those countries though.

He thought it would be too horrible a weapon to use and would stop war. When he saw that no weapon is too horrible, he made his will so that all his money and patents from explosives went to the establishment of the Prizes, including the Peace Prize.

burkeonthesly In reply to tistwas [2010-02-20 10:29:23 +0000 UTC]

And not quite true, or at least misapplied. Dynamite was made for use in mining, as it was more stable than what had been used for blasting previously (nitro-glycerine in many case, if I recall).

There are, of course, many examples throughout history of people who have tried to invent a weapon too horrible for anyone to want to use. Just ask Henry Shrapnel how that tends to work out.

Thank you for pointing out the practical application. Too many alarmists, imo.

So the stability of the explosive would have SAVED more lives than it ENDED.

Also, I'm a fan of the usage of explosives to put out out of control fires, such as oil rigs. I guess the maker didn't think of that either.

Dynamite is no napalm, *tistwas .

A little bit of knowledge is more dangerous than none at all.

burkeonthesly In reply to kikaiyashin [2010-02-21 00:21:31 +0000 UTC]

Well, which would you rather carry into the depths of a rocky, uneven tunnel? A stick that won't so much as pop until it gets hit with a lit fuse, or a jar that'll paint your walls in a fresh coat of Steve if you slosh it too much? (Although old dynamite can sometimes sweat a layer of nitro-glycerine, making them once again volatile--the lesson here, clearly, is to set off your dynamite before it gets old.)

Is it dynamite they use for oil fires, or some higher explosive?

kikaiyashin In reply to burkeonthesly [2010-02-21 19:02:11 +0000 UTC]

Haven't looked into it, really. I'd *imagine* dynamite, just because of its stability.

burkeonthesly In reply to kikaiyashin [2010-02-21 20:15:14 +0000 UTC]

You're not sure which you'd rather carry, or you're not sure which explosive is used on oil rig fires?
