Description Over the years, I've trained in Tae Kwon Do, Kung fu, and Haedong Gumdo.  I'm fascinated by the Samurai, the Shaolin, and the Hwa Rend Do.  The Shaolin practice Chan (aka Zen) Buddhism.  They practice Kung Fu to strengthen the body so they can better practice Chan and withstand long periods of meditation.  Kung Fu practice can also be used as a form of moving meditation.   I've always found moving meditation to be easier than sitting meditation.  I've often wondered what it would be like to live and train at Shaolin temple.

It's a glorified bootcamp, really. More spiritual but if you've ever served in the military you won't find much difference in essence. Strict diet, strict schedule, strict practice. No yelling at you unless you're a complete idiot, and it's way more archaic but that's about it.

Also, authentic mantis fist's back foot points forwards not backwards. Sometimes a 90 degree perhaps but you get corrected every time even if you do that. It's derived from the monkey style.

I'm use to boot camp environment, but I'm not sure I have the discipline now for the diet.  I use to when I was younger, but not as much anymore.  There is a temple in upstate New York, run by a Shaolin Defector.  I've thought about attending one of the retreats.  Maybe after my kids go to college.

Go for it if it's a dream of yours. Nothing to lose. As for the diet, rice is fine.
