Description
Taken at the Indianapolis Zoo - Indianapolis, INI think that these magnificent creatures get overlooked for the more impressive animals such as lions, tigers, cheetahs and other cats, but every time I see a rhinoceros, I have to stop and just watch them. This is a white rhinoceros and is one of two species I had the pleasure of being able to touch earlier this year. Their skin feels like it needs about fifty gallons of Jergen's lotion and their horn, which is actually a growth of keratin (hair and nails) and if becomes broken can continue to grow back. This is unlike the bone antlers of deer that if broken, will not grow back.
White rhinoceros are the largest land mammal behind the species of elephants and are the most abundant between the numbers in captivity and in the wild. However, their species is still Near Threatened and we should continue to do what we can to make sure the world can continue to provide the habitat to ensure the survival of these magnificent animals.

Thank you very much! I know it's not the typical thing that gets lots of attention but I still love it nonetheless.

Thank you! I know that it'll never get the same amount of attention and comments as some of the other photos but I am such a sucker for natural subjects that have beautiful texture.

I really love just watching rhinos too.
They have one in a zoo nearby me, and they're about to open for the season again. I'm looking forward to just admiring that natural grace and power.
You're lucky. I've had the pleasure of touching (and feeding) indian rhinos in the past, but never white rhinos.
