Description Called the most beautiful terrestrial orchid in North America, this Calypso bulbosa is known as the calypso orchid, fairy slipper or Venus's slipper.
This rare little orchid stood about 3 inches off the ground, with a flower about 1/2 inch in diameter, which made photography difficult from this angle.
I had to lay in the wet, muddy forest floor to get this shot.
I photographed it on a hike near the Crest of the Sandia mountains by Albuquerque, on May 24, 2009.

Yes, the fairy slipper "calypso" orchid...a beautiful flower indeed! New Mexico and Arizona have some orchids that can be found nowhere else in the world, and you have made this beauty seem as such. Great work!

Thanks. I guess it came out OK. I'm always a little rushed because of the need to move on. I should do some of these mountain hikes by myself so I could spend more time with each thing I'm trying to photograph. I'd probably get lost however.
