Based on my headcanon againMelkor tried to preserve the remains of Sauron's spirit - and give his Lieutenant a long deserved, Final Reward - by absorbing the Maia fully into his own being. He (and some people such as Celebrimbor) can sense the warmth emanating from Melkor's chest, and the Vala himself appears calm, almost sedated, and complete.
