-Confession-"I've had enough!" The young boy said as he threw his book clear across the room, "By the Gods, this is never going to work!"
The chaplain looked at him wide eyed. What could of caused such a comotion from this generally gentle boy? He set his prayer book down on the desk and slowly shuffled his way towards the young squire.
"What's the trouble, my son? Why have you scolded your studies in the name of the Gods? Sit, and tell me what is bothering you." The kindly dragon asked, his peering eyes gazing deeply concerned at the boy.
"The problem!? You want to know my problem? All I do is sit around and wait! Nothing gets done and nothing is ever going to get done." The skunk shifted angrily in his seat, his hair falling to cover part of his face. "The problem is I don't even know why I'm here. Why I don't get to explore the world like the other boys. Why do I have to sit in service to the so called Gods when no one else even knows they exist?! Can you tell me that, father?"
The dragon closed his eyes and hung his head slightly, taking a deep breath in before exhailing to begin his explaination. He leaned toward the restless skunk and laid his hand on the boy's shoulder to ease him.
"You're here because you're special, Sidney. The other boys you see running around and playing don't have the abilities that you do. They are simple boys from simple lives." The dragon ran a claw under the young skunk's chin to coerce him into eye contact.
"You're different. When you first arrived here with us you were already a healer. And with those healing powers you have the ability to change the entire world. To mend it from the hurtful ways of the boys and girls you admire so dearly."
The skunk swallowed and looked toward the floor nervously before reluctantly looking back up towards the dragon. The kindly old priest waited patiently for the eye contact to return and began his story once more.
"There are people in our world known as healers, Justicars, and they are born here to help every individual with their problems. Their powers are unique and important to the survival of the Races. But, their sorrows and worries are also great. They know the true struggle in this world. And they know the peace from the Otherland as well. You have an understanding of the bond between the living and the dead. You are as the Gods would be in their physical form, Sidney. You are born from them."
The wind blew heavily through the study chamber of the abby and the flames from the torchlight on the walls flickered and danced along with their shadows. The air was quiet and peaceful. The skunk listened closely now, his ears perked and leaned towards the wise dragon.
A small smile spread across the dragon's face as he continued the story, "Being a Justicar does not mean that you have to be completely shut off from the world outside however. That is very much the opposite. You are indeed supposed to live a happy and fufilled life as the rest of the Races do. But, you must take into consideration every action you have will have a consiquence. And some may weigh very very heavily on your heart."
The dragon closed one hand around his other and gently clutched them together. The smile fading from his face as his look turned to one of experience and sorrow. The wind blew again. This time knocking a lantern from the wall. The skunk squeaked and jumped from his seat as the large metal canister crashed onto the stone floor.
They both sat in silence for a moment as they watched the lantern roll across the floor. The warm red embers splashing across the room as thick tendrils of smoke dance and hang in the air around them as though protecting them from further harm. Their gazes returned to one another and the story continued.
"There are many emotions and feelings that you will come across in your journey to become a great healer, Sidney. And you must examine them all very closely to find out why they exist. It is important to understand that. Understand why they exist, how you can relate to them, and how you can progress from those feelings to ones of love and of kindness. Even if the feelings are of hate or remorse you must always come out kind and just. The way that we live is a passive one. You must not be the one to make waves in other people's lives. You must calm their turmulent feelings. You must always show them love."
The skunk shifted nervously in his seat and tilted his head. The young boy's hair drooped over his face again as he laid his ears back slightly.
"What do you mean.. show them love? I thought that was a bad thing? To show...love...I mean. Isn't that bad? You never see anyone show affection at all. Er... at least I never see people show affection. Do you, father? Do you...love people?"
The dragon's snout cracked with a wide grin. The low light claiming the reflection of his massive teeth. He shook his head and chuckled softly. "Of course I do, my son. Of course I do. Love is the greatest of all the feelings. It is the very basis of why we do the things we do. So, yes. I very much enjoy showing people love. Where did you get such a notion that it is a bad thing?"
The skunk laid his ears back more and hugged onto his tail. His glance fell towards the ground as his face blushed a soft red of embarassment.
"I uh....I guess it's just the way people I see act. They're always fighting or competing with one another. They never hug or kiss...or..." His voice trailed off as his face burst into a deep crimson blush.
"y'know... Why don't people do those things with eachother? It must be really really bad if they won't even let anyone see them do it. And when I see other kids my age doing stuff like that... they get scolded and told that they need to stop. Why is that, father? Why do they need to stop? What's wrong with it...?"
The priest's smile desipated and a look of concern once again took claim to his weathered face. He folded his massive wings back and tilted his head down, never breaking sight of the boy's confusing gaze.
"That's a hard question to answer, Sidney. The problem doesn't lie with the act. The problem lies with the people who are condeming the couples to stop their actions. People say it's wrong or inappropriate because they don't want to be reminded themselves of the pain they are going through. Or pain they have gone through before. They see people doing that sort of thing.. showing love like you said.. And they feel like it's going to harm them because they are not in the same place."
The dragon tilted his head to the side and stared at the floor for a moment, thinking of what he could say to help the boy understand better. The wind howled loudly through the study room, blowing papers around playfully on the desk infront of them. In the distance thunder cracked and it began to rain heavily. The sound of the water hitting the tin roof created an even more thoughtful ambiance.
He at last raised his head sharply and smiled a playful grin. "Why are you asking me all of this? Are you in love, Sidney? With a girl? Is that why you've brought all of this up suddenly? You don't have to worry about showing love in that way to anyone. As long as you give them your whole being when you are with them. You can never steer them wrong."
The skunk squeaked quietly and looked down at the floor again. His face grew a bright red color and his tail twitched to the side nervously. "I....I don't like a girl, no. It's something.. scarier than liking a girl, father. And I don't know if the Gods will let me be a healer if I have these type of thoughts."
The room lit up suddenly as lightning struck a nearby tree. The thunder clapped loudly and the rain began to fall harder. The momentum of the storm keeping pace with the growing conversation. Nature listened in carefully as the dragon replied.
"What is it that has you so bothered then, Sidney? You are a child of the Gods. You need not fear who you are. Or even what you might become. They would not fabricate you in a way that would your duty on this world at risk. So, tell me, what has had you bothered this night?"
The skunk sat up straight and stretched out his shoulders before folding his arms nervously over his belly. "I... I have been having these thoughts. Bad thoughts. About others... Mostly boys my age..." He closed his eyes and covered his face in embarassment. "I've been curious what it would be like to... lay... with other people like me. Does it make you a bad person to want that?"
The dragon's face twisted up in thought as he formulated his answer carefully. He brought his gaze to the window and at the storm outside. The water was falling extremely heavily now and the wind was fierce. Lightning cracked overhead, immediately followed by loud claps of thunder.
"I do not believe so, Sidney. What you must understand is if you are to lay with someone, or many people, you must give them your undivided attention. The Gods will not scold you for showing love. No matter whiat type of love it may be that you are showing. Physical, emotional, friendship, parental or any other kind. As long as you make sure you are showing them the right kind of love for the situation, you wil be okay. If you get lost or can't figure out which type to show someone and they get confusing. Ask your spirits. Ask the ones who walk with you. They know most of all what would be best for you to do in any given situation."
