Decampment

Somewhen in past, mankind colonized the moon. The population grew up fast with help coming from earth. But as soon as they noticed that they are able to live autarkical, the people on moon wanted political independence. Of course, earth's United Nations declined this request. The result was the first war between both planetoides.

The people on moon could lean on enough resources and new materials. They developed new kind of engines, ships and weapons and that was why they were easily able to beat everything coming from earth. Earth lost its last resources to built up the colony on moon and had no chance to win this war. Their only hope was the invention of a huge nuclear weapon to destroy the moon as a whole.

Because the moon-people were not able to defeat the earth, they tried to find other solutions. After discovering the plans about the weapon they decided to leave the solar system. With the help of a re-activated core of the moon itself they would get enough energy for their planned engine.

The engine was finished and the journey into the unkown started. As a last message not to follow, the moon-people destroyed the capital of United Nations of Earth, Washington D.C..

Not the best story, I know. So the stage is yours. I hope you get my idea. If you want to write a new little story, feel free to do so (especially a name for the moon-fraction would be cool).

This is the third of my four pics containing earth series called "Future Earth". The fourth picture is also done and just waiting for the release of the next artpack of theluminarium

Thanks a lot to the guys of the #SpaceArt channel for suggestions. You guys rock!!

Make sure to read the alternative story, written by QuiZSnake as well! Thanks a lot man!!!

The moon colonization, the greatest endeavor in the history of earth.
It had taken a century just to get the domes perfected, great caverns being the first cities of the moon.

The Lunas were proud of their new home, a scientific heaven with enough exotic resources to fuel not only their own space programs but also that of the Earth for centuries to come!
They had fought hard to make it a reality, the domes now housing the greatest minds in the solar system along with their families.

The ruler of Luna was an AI, it's mind a mesh of all those alive and dead, the result of everyone being connected to it's interface. It was proud, it was intelligent and it saw the envy that spread below on the blue planet.

Scientific research had boomed on Luna, but Earth was forced to pay heavy taxes on all goods and manufacture was next to impossible on Earth, it's high gravity not able to produce the materials needed. As a result the people on Earth protested, wishing to force the Lunas to share their scientific research.

It was futile, of course, Luna now controlled the basic economy of Earth. It's massive research and manufacturing plants producing most of the modern technologies that made life easy and pleasant.

Envy turned to resentment, to anger and in the end threats of occupation and assimilation of the moon.

The Lunas ignored the petty threats, instead turning their research to a way to escape the clutches of the Earth.
As a war of words and economics was fought by politicians on both sides, the North American Coalition started developing "A way to stop the Lunas for good". Years dragged on, the rising disdain on Luna for Earth meaning they stopped their trade, and as a result massive riots broke out on Earth.

The economy had plummeted after the cold war with Luna had started and since the planetoid had a larger Navy than the Earth, it blocked all ships from the outer colonies reaching Earth. The riots got worse, the governments got desperate. They were about to launch their secret weapon when Luna started moving.... the massive planetoid suddenly inching away from the planet.

The military base and the surrounding area, an area the size of Ireland was vaporized.
Without the moon, the waters fell still, the night went pitch black and a piece of Terra was gone forever.

You don't see that every day the moon having a rocket in it and its about to crash into the earth and it would be the end of man kind. But it would be re born with the laughter of kids and family's having supper and kids playing out side on there brand new bike they got for there b-day.I would love to be riding my bike but its to cold and slippery to do that.I would be a ice cube if i rode my bike to the al riche and back.Half way there i would have froze to death but you get the point.Earth is the best place to be. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Where to begin..

The planet, along with the distant nebula, are both well done though the absence of an atmosphere does leave one to think that perhaps this earth has none? Either way, the lack of it actually cause's a slight issue with immersion.

A moon with an engine? Not a bad idea and well executed I might add, the trails that the engines make are also not that badly done though I am assuming that a part of the moon was used on earth - if that is the case, a bigger explosion would've undoubtedly taken place.

The only other critique I have is the lack of 'life' in the space scene, you have stars and you have a nebula which are good - but the addition of something happening in the distance (like perhaps a distant supernova or something along those lines, maybe even a meteor or comet or perhaps Earth making a last ditch effort to stop them *futile though I might add*) would add much to the scene.

Other than that, this is a great piece with some good talent. Keep it up!

Thanks for your critique hmmm I'm not sure about adding something else. It's always hard to find the right amount of details. Neither too much nor too less. Wouldn't a supernova, or something like that, deflect from the main-event?

Kalshion In reply to TobiasRoetsch [2009-06-01 20:35:15 +0000 UTC]

Your right it would, and ya I can understand the detail's part. The problem is that if you add to much detail, people complain, to little and people complain.. you need to find the right blend.

Absolutly amazing piece of artwork.

I love the concept and the dooms-day scenario behind it. ( although it's quite pessimistic e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/sโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" /> )

As usual, the technique and execution are pretty much flawless.
I really like what you did with that moon, and the engine attached to the sounds great and looks amazing. Though it does remind me of a jellyfish, but then again, they are beautiful creatures. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/sโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

The only critique I might have is the lack of contrast on the big planet earth and weird looking rocket/missile (?).
Kinda looks like a huge skyscraper with a soft pink base.. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/l/lโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="LOL" />

Apart from that, great piece of work. I love it.

I agree that the ship/missile looks kinda weird. I think that the lack of contrast on the planet could indicate smokey atmosphere / less moonlight due to the moon inching away. Overall it's a really nice piece of work, I'd only change that one skyscraper missile thing, the rest is perfect.

The sheer level of detail and the way this masterpiece stands out so nicely altogether is testimony of your skill. :] I especially like the way you made the spaceships and the rockets in here (er, if that is what they are called ), since those portios and the planet stand out the most.
