Decampment

Somewhen in past, mankind colonized the moon. The population grew up fast with help coming from earth. But as soon as they noticed that they are able to live autarkical, the people on moon wanted political independence. Of course, earth's United Nations declined this request. The result was the first war between both planetoides.

The people on moon could lean on enough resources and new materials. They developed new kind of engines, ships and weapons and that was why they were easily able to beat everything coming from earth. Earth lost its last resources to built up the colony on moon and had no chance to win this war. Their only hope was the invention of a huge nuclear weapon to destroy the moon as a whole.

Because the moon-people were not able to defeat the earth, they tried to find other solutions. After discovering the plans about the weapon they decided to leave the solar system. With the help of a re-activated core of the moon itself they would get enough energy for their planned engine.

The engine was finished and the journey into the unkown started. As a last message not to follow, the moon-people destroyed the capital of United Nations of Earth, Washington D.C..

Not the best story, I know. So the stage is yours. I hope you get my idea. If you want to write a new little story, feel free to do so (especially a name for the moon-fraction would be cool).

This is the third of my four pics containing earth series called "Future Earth". The fourth picture is also done and just waiting for the release of the next artpack of theluminarium

Thanks a lot to the guys of the #SpaceArt channel for suggestions. You guys rock!!

Make sure to read the alternative story, written by QuiZSnake as well! Thanks a lot man!!!

The moon colonization, the greatest endeavor in the history of earth.
It had taken a century just to get the domes perfected, great caverns being the first cities of the moon.

The Lunas were proud of their new home, a scientific heaven with enough exotic resources to fuel not only their own space programs but also that of the Earth for centuries to come!
They had fought hard to make it a reality, the domes now housing the greatest minds in the solar system along with their families.

The ruler of Luna was an AI, it's mind a mesh of all those alive and dead, the result of everyone being connected to it's interface. It was proud, it was intelligent and it saw the envy that spread below on the blue planet.

Scientific research had boomed on Luna, but Earth was forced to pay heavy taxes on all goods and manufacture was next to impossible on Earth, it's high gravity not able to produce the materials needed. As a result the people on Earth protested, wishing to force the Lunas to share their scientific research.

It was futile, of course, Luna now controlled the basic economy of Earth. It's massive research and manufacturing plants producing most of the modern technologies that made life easy and pleasant.

Envy turned to resentment, to anger and in the end threats of occupation and assimilation of the moon.

The Lunas ignored the petty threats, instead turning their research to a way to escape the clutches of the Earth.
As a war of words and economics was fought by politicians on both sides, the North American Coalition started developing "A way to stop the Lunas for good". Years dragged on, the rising disdain on Luna for Earth meaning they stopped their trade, and as a result massive riots broke out on Earth.

The economy had plummeted after the cold war with Luna had started and since the planetoid had a larger Navy than the Earth, it blocked all ships from the outer colonies reaching Earth. The riots got worse, the governments got desperate. They were about to launch their secret weapon when Luna started moving.... the massive planetoid suddenly inching away from the planet.

The military base and the surrounding area, an area the size of Ireland was vaporized.
Without the moon, the waters fell still, the night went pitch black and a piece of Terra was gone forever.

Most people don't know the devastation Earth would experience if the moon were to be destroyed/moved too far.
The shortest I can put it is that the moon keeps the Earth from tilting too much. Without the moon, places in the tropics could find themselves in the harsh cold of the polar regions every now and again... Total climatic chaos which could wipe out most if not all complex life on Earth.

The artwork itself is pretty well done. It's easy to see that a lot of effort went into it.

Just one last thought about the situation... I don't think man will ever live on the moon until it's figured out how war would be fought between the astronomical bodies... Today's economics and mentality of consume and waste isn't compatible either since resources won't be as easy to gather as on Earth. Hell, I think the entire economic system and mentality was keeping us from inhabiting the moon 10 years ago.

THEPICISAWESOME!!!

The story?
Not cool bro. Not cool.

Instead, as the moon people were bad, here's my end for the story:

The people in moon were scientists. In other words: Assholes. (No no no! I like physics, math, chemistry, ect. But I hate the people, usually.)
They were mentally corrupted and had no self-critique. But the people from earth, were not defeated yet. They have gotten some people inside the moon and other ships. They were in rage. But they controlled their anger, and planted the nukes. What they had brought with them?

A NOVA bomb and a few Shiva-Class Nuclear Missiles.

They planted the NOVA bomb on the moon and the Shivas on the other ships.

Then they fled, fled for their lifes. They jacked an lightspeed capable small ship and fled outside the range of the NOVA.

Then they fired, and just waited for the explosion. It came 3 minutes later after the bomb had exploded.

"We have visible date of the explosion in: 7"

"...3, 2, 1..."

The gravitational waves reached them and the explosion was visible by naked eye. It was beautiful.

The moon exploded first. It vaporized the moon, and then the shivas wen't off. Destroying completely the people who left earth with the moon people.
An electromagnetic pulse finished off any, not possible, remaining electronics, killing all and succeeding in revenging for earth.
It was a time for happiness. They celebrated and headed back to earth.

But little did they knew. Without the moon, the earth was in trouble.

How did you make the sphere that is rocketing by the earth?

Did you do it in Photoshop? I can't make something look 3D and then make one of the surfaces flat (like a dome)

Any tips?

BTW, in removing the Moon from the Earth's orbit, the Lunarians have pretty much doomed life on earth anyway. Without the gravitational effects of the moon...well, you can look it up. It's pretty interesting.

This is a brilliant piece. I love the space surrounding the Earth, and the detail of the Earth as well. There's just a bit I'd like to point out, as a possible addition to the story.
By leaving the 'Lunas' had dealt the final blow. The only reason there can be life on Earth is because of our moon, and with it gone, the life as a whole would slowly come to a close.
According to some scientists it's because of the size and distance from the sun the Earth is, but also because of our moon that there is life on Earth.
