Decampment
Somewhen in past, mankind colonized the moon. The population grew up fast with help coming from earth. But as soon as they noticed that they are able to live autarkical, the people on moon wanted political independence. Of course, earth's United Nations declined this request. The result was the first war between both planetoides.
The people on moon could lean on enough resources and new materials. They developed new kind of engines, ships and weapons and that was why they were easily able to beat everything coming from earth. Earth lost its last resources to built up the colony on moon and had no chance to win this war. Their only hope was the invention of a huge nuclear weapon to destroy the moon as a whole.
Because the moon-people were not able to defeat the earth, they tried to find other solutions. After discovering the plans about the weapon they decided to leave the solar system. With the help of a re-activated core of the moon itself they would get enough energy for their planned engine.
The engine was finished and the journey into the unkown started. As a last message not to follow, the moon-people destroyed the capital of United Nations of Earth, Washington D.C..

The moon colonization, the greatest endeavor in the history of earth.
It had taken a century just to get the domes perfected, great caverns being the first cities of the moon.
The Lunas were proud of their new home, a scientific heaven with enough exotic resources to fuel not only their own space programs but also that of the Earth for centuries to come!
They had fought hard to make it a reality, the domes now housing the greatest minds in the solar system along with their families.
The ruler of Luna was an AI, it's mind a mesh of all those alive and dead, the result of everyone being connected to it's interface. It was proud, it was intelligent and it saw the envy that spread below on the blue planet.
Scientific research had boomed on Luna, but Earth was forced to pay heavy taxes on all goods and manufacture was next to impossible on Earth, it's high gravity not able to produce the materials needed. As a result the people on Earth protested, wishing to force the Lunas to share their scientific research.
It was futile, of course, Luna now controlled the basic economy of Earth. It's massive research and manufacturing plants producing most of the modern technologies that made life easy and pleasant.
Envy turned to resentment, to anger and in the end threats of occupation and assimilation of the moon.
The Lunas ignored the petty threats, instead turning their research to a way to escape the clutches of the Earth.
As a war of words and economics was fought by politicians on both sides, the North American Coalition started developing "A way to stop the Lunas for good". Years dragged on, the rising disdain on Luna for Earth meaning they stopped their trade, and as a result massive riots broke out on Earth.
The economy had plummeted after the cold war with Luna had started and since the planetoid had a larger Navy than the Earth, it blocked all ships from the outer colonies reaching Earth. The riots got worse, the governments got desperate. They were about to launch their secret weapon when Luna started moving.... the massive planetoid suddenly inching away from the planet.
The military base and the surrounding area, an area the size of Ireland was vaporized.
Without the moon, the waters fell still, the night went pitch black and a piece of Terra was gone forever.

I believe this story has already been written. I think it is called: "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress", by Arthur C. Clarke.

I hope you can relate or understand the following: I can tell you where and what I was doing( I was little) when Carpenter,Sheppard and Glen was sent to space and ever since I was hooked on space period, having seen your work and others here has brought memories of me with my crayons and colored pencils...This latest work is so good, I am taken by its originality and the layout itself is awe spoken...I enjoy each new post.

Most of my space work is hiding away on a back up disk some where, many I print on to murals as I came across a HP650C for nothing, I made a stand for it and had to improvise a para-vs-usb cable but it prints so sweet, I also use a Epson1400 photo printer as it will give me 13X19 as its biggest platform but nothing like the HP650C, my "art work" room is a complete 4-wall of the universe as if you were standing on the moon looking in all 4 directions, abit cheese but hey, anyway I enjoy your work, wished I had more time to devote to it but my trade keeps me busy dam near 12-14 hrs a day, a love-hate type of work....

I really like your work. Especially this one and the others of this series and i'd like to write a sort of short story that is partly inspired by your work. If you'd like, I could send you my progress as it goes on. Message me if that sounds good to you!

very cool pic indeed... but i have a theory about the stories instead.. i liked the first one a little better, but thats not the point.. i started to wonder if the whole moon would fly away what would become of earth.. It was a little bit hinted in the end of the alternative story, but to my understanding life on earth would become rather nasty, because the moon is supposed to keep things in order for us like the tides and currents without which the weather would become quite harsh.. I'm not quite sure if this scenario is already planned for the upcoming pieces, but i would suggest that it would be one possible way of things to evolve .. At the moment I'm thinking something in the lines of how the movie "Serenity" begins if you have seen it.. Desperate people of earth mounting a last quest for other worlds to inhabit and one day hoping to repay the moon people (i.e)
But all in all another great pic..

As error prone as the story may be (regarding scientific possibilities of planetary locomotion and such), i think it really helps to bring life and meaning to the illustration. Fantastic job!

Wonderful! The idea with the moon reminds me of game Marathon, where mankind makes giant colony ships out of Mars' two moons: Phobos and Deimos.
Love the starscape and all the details.

The story I think is really good, perhaps even plausible, and trust me - your'e not the first to turn a planet into a rocket shop (there's an episode of the cartoon "Invader Zim" where he turns Mars into what you've done with the Moon here )
Bah, so the Moon people got all hissy and left Earth, it will be their loss once they realise that they will be tarvelling through the nothingness of space for a million years before maybe finding anything good I wonder what the Moon's absence will do to life on earth
Suppose we can "borrow" Mercury and repeat the process again

Ugh... "Washington DC", "North American Coalition"... one look at history will tell anyone that dominance today does not mean dominance tomorrow.
On the other hand, the artwork itself is very eye-catching. It's mind-boggling to envision propulsion that size on the moon, and a pity the solar system isn't that bright in reality. It's a little unclear what the tower-like ship at the bottom-right is supposed to be, but I'm guessing it's just another of the colony ships travelling with the moon.
Aside from the depressing story and perpetuating the belief that the US is the centre of the world, nice work.

Oh that's embarrassing. I just realised I had been talking to QuiZSnake, not you. Oops.
All I am saying is that kingdoms and nations come and go. Yes, the US is the dominant world power at present and I'm not saying they haven't necessarily earned their right to be in that position. But I certainly don't believe that will necessarily be the case in even a few generations' time.
Of course, looking over your story again, I now realise you're talking about the United Nations. Which happens to have its capital in the US anyway, but I see I've made a double-mistake. Oh well. My other remarks regarding the artwork itself are still valid.

Heh, it never says anything about the US being the leader of the North American Coalition, perhaps Canada finally got the upper hand they needed?
I needed to put a name on the place being bombed... and calling it the "Native Indian Hostel" seemed wrong somehow...

Wedge009 In reply to QuiZSnake [2009-03-24 11:28:44 +0000 UTC]
It's all right, I just get upset whenever I see US as the focus for everything. I get tired of US residents - not all of them, but lots all the same - acting and talking like they're the centre of the universe and the rest of the world doesn't exist.
And yes, I'm fully aware the US doesn't account for the entirety of the North American continent.
If it was up to me, I would have just said the capital of whatever Earth-wide government you choose to make up... yes, I know that doesn't stop the problem of actually being able to identify the bombed area in your artwork...

QuiZSnake In reply to Wedge009 [2009-03-24 12:12:34 +0000 UTC]
I understand, but at current it's kind of inevitable that the US seems the centre of the world. They are very good at marketing after all.
Look at it this way, at least taenaron choose an easily recognizable landmass to nuke into oblivion
Note that I'm not American either.

Of course, departure of the moon from Earth's orbit would assumably result in catastrophic shifts of the balance of our ecosystems and bring about the end of life as we know it.
But hey, it looks cool.
