Description Well i've decided to make a tutorial about something i actually know something about. that made no sense. forgive me it's 2 AM. I spent a great deal too much time on this, and had a great deal too much fun. I am by no means an expert, but i hope this is helpful to someone.
if you do anything with it, please show it to me! (and link back to the tutorial, dur)
oh and i forgot to mention in the actual tutorial- this is all done on OpenCanvas 1.1. just for the record.
i know i had something else to say but i can't for the life of me remember what it was.

I've never coloured anything on the computer before and I won't start for many reasons (but I would like to someday) but this is also a useful guideline and reminder for "real" painting. I'm still struggling with trying to do it more efficiently because mostly I just start somewhere and then improve and correct and fix and add new layers until I'm satisfied. I might print this to go back and forth with it
Anyways: Faved!

...sorry? Did you mean program and brushes and stuff? Cause I did talk about those. If you meant tablet, etc, my bad. I use a wacom intuos 3.

Thanks for the tutorial, I could use it to do more than blocks.

It would be interesting if you can post a topic on color scheme vs personality.

"color scheme vs. personality" sounds interesting, but i'm not sure i understand what you mean? Do you mean the moods that different color schemes create?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

sevenofeleven In reply to toerning [2009-05-27 01:18:18 +0000 UTC]

Yes and more.
What types of personalities do people assume with hair color, eye color, clothing and item colors?
That would be an interesting tutorial to do.

All of these little color tricks are boggling my mind! They're perfect and make a lot of sense, and yet I couldn't figure them out on my own. Thank you, once again, for showing them to me. Portraits are my favorite thing to draw; I'm always looking for ways to make them interesting so my viewers don't groan and say "another portrait??"

Nice tutorial. I don't have OC, but the tips give could really work for any program, I'm sure (I have PS and doing realistic skin is the hardest thing.. and my hair... UGH!).

Thanks for doing this!

toerning In reply to RhyssaFireheart [2007-10-21 18:05:50 +0000 UTC]

oh yeah this'll work on any program. If you're trying to duplicate the feel of the OC brushes (that's really why i use OC,) a great one is any circular brush- check opacity settings and size pressure but switch it so it only gets smaller by a few pixels and then bring the spacing ALL the way down-voila! OC brush!
thanks!

RhyssaFireheart In reply to toerning [2007-10-24 21:38:05 +0000 UTC]

Nice, I'll have to try that with the brushes. I keep looking for different ways to do the brushing besides just playing with the size and/or opacity and flow. Well, plus I need to work on using the pressure sensitivity of my tablet a bit better than I do. I tend to get a bit heavy handed still sometimes and don't get any fade in my strokes.

I've been looking for new ways to color (I have a tendency to use horrible bold colors), so do you think I can use PS just as effectively as OC?
Where did you get your Open Canvas?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toerning In reply to SieTalon [2007-09-05 03:48:48 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop DOES work just as well as Opencanvas, but it takes a LOT more effort to make it look as...effortless. Because there are so many tools and options in photoshop, it takes a lot longer and it's a lot harder to create this effect. but it all depends on what you're going for- if you want the smoother photoshop look, go for it, but i suggest downloading OC- there are several links at the end of this tutorial: [link]
even if you don't want it for portraiting, it's a great program to have around.

I. Love. You. This is EXACTLY what i've been looking for. "Scoot that other thingy down SE a bit." That is practically what I wanted to hear when asking other 'pro' artists for help on choosing shades, but THIS. THIS IS GOLD.

*has a horrific episode of fandom and clings to your ankle.*

exdevlin In reply to toerning [2007-03-15 20:36:24 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I have something of a question for you. Since you say move it down SE for skintones, what direction do you move it in for shading other things, say sheer fabrics?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

toerning In reply to exdevlin [2007-03-16 03:27:27 +0000 UTC]

well when i do sheer fabrics, i paint everything as usual and then paint on a separate layer the fabric as if it were solid, and then simply lower the opacity.
as far as other materials, it all depends on the color scheme. if it is a portrait, i'll do it along the same lines- down towards the red and all that, just not as extreme, because we want it all to match. if it's a full painting, you don't have the same kind of color restrictions, so it's more open, and you can judge by section or character or whatever. What i suggest is: find a color scheme you like for every piece you do, you don't have to lay it out, just have an idea in your head. That way, when you find the shades, you'll be able to keep the same consistency as you would with skintone!
i hope that answered your question?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

exdevlin In reply to toerning [2007-03-16 19:11:42 +0000 UTC]

That's a good idea. I've also experimented with other people's paintings just by dragging the color-dropper over an area and watching the color square change. It's interesting, because a lot of people shade with the little circle dragging SW instead of SE.

toerning In reply to exdevlin [2007-03-17 23:04:19 +0000 UTC]

i think that really depends on what kind of atmosphere you're trying to create. If it's cold or nightime or any number of things, i would suggest going in that direction. it gives your picture a colder look (perhaps for fabric...) just as going towards red creates warmth.
