Description
There's this one moment at the end of this movie, when toothless is helping hiccup hobble to the door and then his busted tail sweeps into frame...The first time I saw it, my reaction to the movie went from "this is the best thing that's ever happened to me" to "this is the best thing that's ever happened to animation."
There were several moments of really skillful bringing-it-back-around in the movie, but that one was by FAR my favourite.
Anyway derp derp more fanart- this time with dragon included!
Brush and ink and photoshop.

I did really love this ending. It wasn't the typical "EVERYTHING-turns-out-perfect" ending. There was loss, and a very personal one at that. It was - is - wonderful. And extraordinarily moving.

Exactly how I felt! I was like OMG! PARALLEL!
Thank you for expressing my feelings in art. If you are ever to do anothe rone, you should do an art version of that one shot from behind (in the movie, its very foggy and filter, which renders any screen shots poor quality)
I really like the pencil, drawn type of look you've got going on here. I cant realy say why, but it makes the moment feel more real for me.
Thanks, Ginger.

For those of you who have seen the Holiday HTTYD short film (I think it was "Gift of the Night Fury"?), it has more of Toothless helping Hiccup out when he slips on the ice with his metal leg there.

Absolutely love that part, twas my favourite scene right next to the scene of the two of them drawing each other. You did this so beautifully, I feel like toothless is telling him ''It'll be okay'' to cheer him up.

I have to agree that the moment when Toothless helps Hiccup walk to the door was a wonderful heart-warming moment. I also agree that the deliberate juxtaposition of Hiccup's prosthetic foot and Toothless's mangled tail is a nice emphasis of their common condition. Another nice touch is the use of a quiet version of the "Test Drive" music from their first flight.
They are two friends, both somewhat less than whole, who are more than the sum of their parts when they are together.

Thank you so much for including me- it's a really beautiful and inspiring video!
In general, it is standard to ask beforehand, but I'm mostly just saying that as general advice since I wouldn't want you to get into any sticky situations- I've got no qualms!

It was my pleasure, I'm glad you liked it, thats what I was going for but I don't really have a lot of experience when it comes to stuff like that.
Yeah if I ever use any dA art again I'm going to make sure I ask first, I only realised after I'd made it and I felt like a tool. Luckily everyone has been really nice about it (=

I love moments like that in animation--parts where, if an audience is really paying attention, they'll notice the beauty of subtle moments and symbolism like that. It's beautiful. Thanks for pointing this out.

When Hiccup's jaw dropped as he lifted up the covers.... That's when the little animation connoisseur in the back of my head let out a little Neo-like "Whoa." Mute shock. That was new...
And then there's a short moment, just before he gets off the bed, where he stares at Toothless with an "Oh-my-God-now-what" expression as his feet hit the floor and he realizes the sensation in one of them no longer goes all the way down... It nearly brought me to tears.
And yet.... And yet I immediately realized that Gobber been preparing us throughout the entire movie for this moment. We'd been seeing an amputee throughout the movie - but he wasn't an invalid; he was a mobile, active member of society, and his various screw-on implements were a help instead of a hindrance.
On another note: I'm an aerospace engineering student, and I saw this with a bunch of engineering friends... That slow prototyping process? The best I've ever seen in a movie. We were all squeee-ing with joy. And then Test Drive? The combined awesome of the soundtrack, flight mechanics, and realistic physics pushed me into incoherency.

That scene is so powerful, I agree. I teared up the first dozen times I saw that tiny bit of animation, and I gotta hand it to the animators--they really did a wonderful job in that film. There were so many subtle things that just made the movie and the characters that much stronger. Definitely one of my favorite animated films to date <3

I'm so happy you did this piece. The ending is so bitter sweet, I was craving some art like this.
I thought very similar thoughts when I saw the ending. It's as if the directer GOT it. Endings have to be significant not just to the hero but to the viewer. About time, yeah?

I broke down crying at that scene.
It's the first time an animated movie's made me cry because of how beautiful it was, and from those last 5 minutes of the movie, HTTYD went from "one of my favorite movies" to "my favorite movie." It was just so...powerful. I still get chills from watching it.
Love your style and your rendition of this moment.
