Description
There's this one moment at the end of this movie, when toothless is helping hiccup hobble to the door and then his busted tail sweeps into frame...The first time I saw it, my reaction to the movie went from "this is the best thing that's ever happened to me" to "this is the best thing that's ever happened to animation."
There were several moments of really skillful bringing-it-back-around in the movie, but that one was by FAR my favourite.
Anyway derp derp more fanart- this time with dragon included!
Brush and ink and photoshop.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?
When he put his foot on the floor, followed by the prosthetic, I came sooo close to bursting into tears on my friend's sofa, I had to muffle my sniffling by shifting into a different position to make her leather couch creak (her husband pirated it so I watched it at her house while it was still in theatres, HA). Now that I have it on Blu-Ray, I still almost burst into tears when I see that scene. It made my dad gasp, audibly. I hardly ever hear him give any kind of emotional reaction like that during a movie. Laughing doesn't count. No. It doesn't.

The scene exposing Hiccup's prosthetic leg for the first time completely ripped my heart to shreds. I love how they were able to express Toothless' concern simply from his subtle facial expressions. Such an incredible scene! I loooove that you drew this and portrayed it perfectly!

I agree with you, this is one of the best scenes of the movie. Again, this is brilliant, I really like their expressions

Wouh, first time I saw this part in the movie it gave me goosebumps D: and I really had to hold back a tear... it was just such an awesome idea
love the colouring <3 but in the beginning I thought that Hiccup's leg is a lamp because of the lightening *cough* XD
anyway, great work

Hey just a heads up the right eye on hiccup isn't reading correctly, hard to make out if the top bit is an open eye with cheek underneath or the bottom is a closed eye with eyelid above. Other than that great piece.

Your use of tone and color always impresses me Leela.
Indeed, this film had all sorts of wonderful subtleties going on in it. It was so well handled in places that it made me truly wonder how amazing a performance captured animation actually would be, should someone be so inclined to do so... (hint hint)
We should talk soon. Or soon-ish, if time permits.

The first time I saw the movie (a couple days ago--I wish I had seen it sooner), my first thought in that scene was, "Oh my goodness! Their injuries are on the same side!" I loved the fact that they highlighted it by having his tail come into the scene.

Awesome. What did you use to make this? It looks like it could be digital but I'm guessing it's not since you didn't mark it as digital and the sketchiness is different than most digital arts.
Beautiful job, I really like the angles of both Toothless and Hiccup's bodies.

Thanks! It's traditional inks and digital colors. For pieces like this that are half and half for the category I just default to whatever I spent more time on, and that's almost always the traditional part.

I had the same reaction
There's an important element in story that is always forgotten. It's what the character loses to gain victory. It's always forgotten, especially in "kid's" movies.
Part of the reason I adore this movie so much :]

a lot of people aren't doing 2D anymore because it's expensive and time consuming... so we're forced to see great stories suffer with crappy 3D animation, I was so friggin happy to see this movie rise above that and I can actually say that this is the epitome of what 3D should try to accomplish in animated movies I love capture on the ending moment. ♥

Oh this is just a lovely piece of art!
I just love the way how the movie was written. Everything just made sense and there was a lot of call backs. My favorite was when Stoic says "I did this." just like Hiccup said it.

Yes! I love this part in the movie, and your drawing is just...! Ah, I love it~~ The colors, the mood, everything.
This is one of the most memorable scenes for me from the film. The music is just perfect, and the boarding was top notch; it brings to mind a description of the guy who did this scene (whose name unfortunately escapes me): "Whenever we needed to make the audience cry, we go to this guy." Haha, seriously!
This movie as a whole has just been rocking my socks off. Thanks for being so enthusiastic about it and drawing so much fanart and keeping the fandom going !
