Finally caught up with this. Sasuke appearing is a surprise to be sure but a welcome one.

It follows the same plot with some NaruSaku "adjustments" or changes things that didn't make much sense in the movie (like Naruto being trapped in a genjutsu). Only the last fight and Sasuke's arrival are different from the movie. In the entire movie he saves Kakashi from a meteor is only seen for about 10 seconds. I think the artist(of this) wants to involve Sasuke in the main story, so it will be more interesting from now on. I just hope he doesn't pull a SasuHina move (because I personally ship SasuKarin). By the way, you're making the right decision by not watching the movie. The characters (especially Naruto, Sakura and Hinata) feel so out of character,I regret watching it and I'm very grateful for this fanmade version.
