Hey just wondering, would you use a custom brush to paint the textures onto the buildings or was it all hand painted line by line etc? Also the same question regarding the building to the left of the image that has not been built yet.

I use a standard round photoshop brush with opacity on pen pressure (wacom tablet) A lot of ' leg work ' is done with images manipulated over the top.

Ahh I see. I guess I need a tablet to use pen pressure T_T.

They are pretty cheap these days. www.amazon.com/Wacom-Bamboo-Ca… - this is more than enough to do the sort of stuff I do.

How do you do the buildings windows?
Do you use textures? or make brushes for it?
Thanks for the tutorial!

you mean the "light up" ones? Those are really easy to do. I got a light blue or yellow colour (not too saturated) and then blot them onto the building. (no brush, just selection tool) Doesn't need to be super accurate as you see them from a distance. Then you use a blend mode (in photoshop's layer pallet)Then play with which blend mode you think looks best. I don't really use on blend mode consistantly. I always mess with all of them. Hope this helps

p.s: the only brush i used was photoshops standard hard edged round brush.

Thanks for the reply m8!
I had some troubles at the beginning but now its done..
oh! and one more thing..

Did you matte paint the construction panels on the buildings or are they textures too? in the old city part. I saw you did a sky scrapper but you put construction bars on top of it..

You also use brushes for the street texture or you used a texture also?

Sorry for all the questions, but I was doing some matte painting and I wanna learn from excellent artist such as you.. (and I see you have a good attitude at teaching, that's awesome!)

Hey no problem!

The construction panels are texture. If you go to www.cgtextures.com then the building section you can find pretty much all the textures i used.

I only use one brush. Photoshops standard round brush. I used textures as a base then added to them by painting on them. (This is the same for most things in the scene)

I'm not an excelent artist in my mind haha. I have had some experience doing matte paintings at studios and this is way to get quick results that my bosses liked so I wanted to share it.

Your work is great btw

Heeeey! Thanks a lot for the reply and the compliments! Its an honor! coming from an excellent artist!

I search for the textures and found them! they're great!
I used different textures and I think I hit the spot.. but I still looking at your composition and still stunning me!

Its funny cuz I'm getting into the matte painting after doing a lot of illustration, so I have to learn from you a bit more heh.. and if I can help you with anything it will be a pleasure..

Thanks again for your time Tokuku!

no problem at all. Yeah your work is amazing! I do a bit of illustration as well. Matte painting is great also. I love doing those sorts of images. For me it takes the viewer into the world inside my head! haha

thankyou edsfox

I hope I can post the matte painting I'm doing soon.. so you can give some feedback at it.. just remember is the first attempt on something like that..
And I must say that is kind of a pain in the ass all the searching for references and textures.. I almost spent two man days on it.. so.. I hope it ends well hehe..

I agree with you in the "viewer" part! and can say its "delicious" when you transport someone into that world with that piece of art..

My pleasure tokuku and thanks again!
