Description Yes, the inspiration behind the name of the painting is the song by the band Travis

Created on 27.4.2016
watercolor
size A4

I made the painting for the group   , for their monthly theme "April Showers".

Well, this one was a good practice...why?

When I saw the theme I was excited and wanted to do something.   So I made a drawing and wanted to start painting. When I suddenly realized...how do you paint the rain?!

Um...I realized that I never painted rain...but...I did it!

About the weather...today is the 27th of april...umm...it's snowing outside  ...for real...
I'm waiting for the whole april for the rain to fall (for my garden), instead I got snow.
My poor flowers and trees

Soooo pretty I like it very much sweet, warm colours but personally I think that your rain would look more realistic if you used liquid masking film for them instead of painting it with white paint It never will shine the way clean paper do

Thank you for the comment.

At first I was so enthusiastic to paint the rain, but then I remembered I never done it...so how do you "paint" rain
I looked some artworks to get and idea and went with this one.
I haven't thought about the masking fluid. I stopped using it and switched to white opaque color instead. It's pretty expensive for me too, so I'm not exactly excited to buy one.
But it would be really great to see how it would look done with masking fluid. Maybe I'll try this method some day.

Thank you for your suggestion!

Well, I don't know, I have never drawn rain haha but I would certainly drew drops like glass, with sharp edges and strong contrasts. When I will finish the drawing I am currently working on, I will paint for you rain drops You suprised me a bit, what is expensive? Masking film? I have never been in Slovenia, I completely do not know your market but in my country one bottle of this liquid (eg. Talens 75 ml) costs ca 3,77 EUR. I always considered this medium as one of the cheapest actually and most efficient at the same time.

In my shop where I buy my art supplies (I have only one btw) they have only one option from Schmincke in tubes 25 ml sells for 6,70€. And that's the only one I have ever had.
It's this one:
www.bead.si/slikanje/dodatki-z…

Well, I don't do online shopping to buy somewhere else.

Or market...our incomes are low, but the prices like we're in France, Germany or Britain.   And lots of high taxes, for every s* possible.

Drops are ok, but rain is a mystery   The drops are made also in this painting...like on the stem of the mushroom or on it's hat.

But you made me think to explore the water as a subject to paint a little bit more.   I'll keep that in mind

Oh my God   That's robbery  I am sorry for you, but I checked that your prices are almost twice as big as ours but also your salaries are twice as big as in my country. So, friend, we may say that we both ride the same horse You should check your internet shops, perhaps you will find accesories for artists cheaper (maybe auction platforms as e-bay, allegro, amazon, I don't know what you have there).

But, my dear, I have for you one crazy proposition I checked shipping costs from Poland to Slovenia in my post office One light letter goes for ca 4 EUR, one pack ca 1kg goes for 13 EUR, one pack ca 5 kg goes for 19 EUR Maybe you will buy your accesories in Polish shop? at the very example of masking film - in Polish shop you buy 75 ml for 4,94 EUR + shipping 4 EUR what is ca 9 EUR for 75 ml, in your shop you buy 25 ml for 6 EUR so if you want to get 75 ml you have to pay 18 EUR...   Maybe you could make bigger order, paints, papers, brushes, pencils, canvas etc, alone or maybe with your friends if you know someone who is also an artist This might be very profitable.
Here is link for my beloved internet shop, based in Cracovia. I do shopping there for almost ten years now. This is a really hudge shop. They are very professional, and they ship orders abroad

And I use this masking film:

I told you
Bad, ugly prices...very bad

--------------------
About or salary, I checked it on Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_… ; (It's from 2014)

The latest statistic data from our national statistical office for May 2016 is 1.016€ (neto).
What I saw for Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia is unbelievable (~700-800€).

That's why I'll shut up on this topic
--------------------

I already wrote that I don't do online shopping

But, but...
For now I won't buy anything, so it doesn't matter   ...have some trouble with my
That sucks

Thank you for such a detailed info about shopping and shipping
That version of a masking fluid you use is much better I think, that one in the tube isn't so practical. I didn't have good control of lines.

Thank you! I'm always doing my best and try to improve. Sometimes more, sometimes less successful.

I'm very proud of this one because I did very well on the details and like you said it looks realistic. That was what I was aiming for.

There are times when everything comes nice together and sometimes you just don't know what went wrong

chronicvillainy [2016-05-15 13:13:11 +0000 UTC]

Love how whimsical this looks, and the colouring looks really nice! The pinks and greens of the flowers and the catterpillar is a nice contrast with the owl in the front!

TokyoMoonlight In reply to chronicvillainy [2016-05-15 15:32:12 +0000 UTC]

I stuck with the original colors (like they were on the reference photos) and it blended all well together.  Again, brown is a wonderful color when mixed with others.   But you can add one wrong color and the whole painting goes down the hill.

Sometimes it takes hours for me to decide in which direction to go. So the time goes by and I haven't done anything.
But...
As long as the completed artwork looks ok at the end, I'm happy

I like the whimsical style in this and the different watercolor techniques. The little details like the insects are so charming.

Don't worry about the owl...the little ladybug has "bigger" problems.   It doesn't have a very useful umbrella.

Snowing in April? I didn't even get snow in January!
This is a precious painting, all the little creatures make it special. And the mushroom is so realistic!  Very nice.

TokyoMoonlight In reply to indigoatmosphere [2016-04-28 08:39:02 +0000 UTC]

For the snow I can say the same...the whole winter was dry. If there was maybe one week that we had snow. Now we already had temperatures for sunbathing.  I even got my skin sun-tanned while working in my garden. I realized it in the evening when I watched myself in the mirror.

Thank you for your nice words on my painting. I searched for some ideas on the internet and found a photo with an owl   and a mushroom  . But I instantly knew I want some other animal on top of the mushroom...so came a little cute caterpillar and then...a ladybug.
