Description Oil on canvas. 22"x28".

Full title: "Springtime in the Eleventh Dimension".

I started spontaneously painting , without any preconceived idea, biomorphic imagery at the top. Then I didn't quite know what to do next so I left the painting alone for a few days. While listening to the "Larks Tongues in Aspic" album by King Crimson while in 'the right frame of mind', I knew what to do then and went back to the painting. The title refers to the idea in Quantum Physics and String Theory that reality may be made up of 11 dimensions.

I started out at the top spontaneously painting organic forms against a black background. I came up with the landscape below later.

I like your icon, by the way. "Tubular Bells" is one of my favorite albums.

The subtle modulations in color and form is outstanding. You have great command of the medium.
I would like to have seen something more done to the clock near the center of the painting. It's a bit jarringly realistic; with the pendulum shown dead center, has time stopped at twenty after six?

Tolkyes In reply to Myronavitch [2012-07-16 22:03:25 +0000 UTC]

Time doesn't actually stand still in the 11th dimension, it's just always twenty after six.
It's hard to explain. Time and space have different properties there.

Its a pain because you have to change mounts at least 3 times and you have to pass through the
14th dimension and you can't think any of their thoughts there or you won't get home.

Speaking of King Crimson, your method of doing the painting then leaving it for a while... makes me think of their song "Indiscipline." A great concept, IMO.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Tolkyes In reply to eddievhfan1984 [2011-07-15 16:33:52 +0000 UTC]

I prefer early King Crimson but I still like their later work, too. In the early 1980's amid the New Wave music I was listening to at the time, it was good to hear new King Crimson who had rejoined to create music like "Discipline", "Indiscipline" and "Three of a Perfect Pair".
I didn't like their later albums like "Thrack" as much but at least King Crimson never went commercial like everyone else did in the '80's.

I haven't listened to them. The local underground radio station (WMNF) used to play King Crimson and other good music up until about three years ago but not so much anymore. I'll have to check out King Crimson more on the internet through You Tube, etc.

I'm glad you like it. I like to create spontaneous organic shapes that look interesting to me without actually making them look like anything in particular.
This probably makes them more evocative since it leaves your imagination open as to what they are exactly.

I sometimes use strange plants and jellyfish as models to go by but not in this particular painting.
